LA MESA — The shift og power in the Grossmont Conference has completely moved to the southwest, with Monte Vista, Mount Miguel owning the best records entering the opening of Grossmont Hills League boys basketball tis week.
Monte Vista holds the top spot withan 11-7 overall recod, while theMatadord and Cougars just one step behind at 10-8.
The neutral site, tournament game held at Helix saw Imperial survive in what was East County’s most exciting ballogame of the season on Monday (Jan. 5), a 102-99 double-overtime triumph for the Tigers.
The contest was the highest-scoring game invlving a Grossmont Conference school since 2019-20, when Health Sciences neded four overtimes to nip host El Capitan, 115-113, at Foster Gymnasium in Lakeside.
The Monte Vista-Imperial battle was reminiscent of NBA pro basketball contest, which huge scoring runs dictating the action. Incuded was a 32-point effort by the Tigers in the third quarter, yet the Monarchs rallied to pull even at 79-all at the end of regulation time.
The Monarchs opened the fourth period on an 51-0 scoring run, the first 11 to tie the game. The streak feastured consecutive baskets by Daesean Jenkins, Garret Jenkins and Jaren Wright, followed by a 3-point goal fro guard Noah Morrison to pull even at 66-all.
The hot streak continued to 15 straight points on buckets by Jenkins and Wright to mount a 4-point lead before Imperial finally replied. Included was a Marc Vitela field goalin the final seconds to extend the contest.
The first overtime finihsed level at 11-each, capped by a last-second basketball from Jacob Abatti. The senior, who finished with 15 points, is a 3-point shooter, but the shot was ruled with his foot on the 3-point arc, resulting in another overtime.
Despite Monte Vista scoring the first four points in the second staza, Imperial recorded 10 of the next 12 points, incluing six by Gio Robles, and plus by Vitela, whcih were the buckets to snap a 94=all deadlock to grab the lead for keeps.
This was Monte Vista’s first multiple-overtime ballgame since the 2002-03 seaso, when Helix took a 76-75 decision d at the Hilltop Tournament on Tue., Dec. 10, 2002 (pre-MaxPreps; EastCounty Sports keeps pour own records.
Monte Vista scoring leaders: Daesean Jenkins 31, Jaren Wright 25, Garret Tully 22, Jacob Abatti 15.
Mont Miguel 63, Imperial 48 — Monte Vista may own a better record, when when the Matadors donwed Imperial the following night (Jan. 6), they may hold the inside edge for the GHL title.
Steele Canyon – The Cougars opned the tournament with a 53-44 win over Imperial, but then dropped their next two contests. They fell to Bonita Vista, 76-54, and Montgomery, 60-57.
