FLETCHER HILLS – The return of Grossmont College women’s softball following three cancelled seasons due to Covid-19 has been slow, yet the Griffins seemed to have finally turned the corner after 3-4 through te first week if the season.
Following a season-opening setback, Grossmont has bounced back by splitting a trio of doubleheaders, including victories over solid programs inGolden West an Chaffedy.

MENIFEE – The Griffinsout-hit the host Eagles, 6-5, but the hosts but three of their hits together in a 3-run fifth inning to take the season opner on Friday (Jan. 23).
Second baseman BHeidi Villa (Grossmont HS) paced the Griffins with two hits, including a triple.
Kaleigh Baugher (Granite Hills) and Jamsyn Regas (Chaprral) each added doubles, but MSJC pitcher Ellianna Pasley was able to strand seven baserunners — four in scoring position — to complte her shutout.
Golden West 4, Grossmont 3

FLETCHER HILLS – After stranding three runners at third base in the opener, Grossmont runed the tables by by pushing across runs in the sixth and eighth innings to salvage a split with the Rustlers of Huntington Beach.
Kaleigh Baugher singled to left field to bring home Ryleigh Vesco (El Capitan) to force extra innings. Later, Vesco lifted a sacrifice fly to leftfor the walk-off, game-winner, scoring Hernandez (Fallbrook) from third.
Hernandez also garnered the pitching victory with three innings of no-hiy relief. The freshman retired all nine batters.

VICTORVILLE – Grossmont overcame a 3-hit shutot setback in the opener with its best offensive showing of the season to split with the host Rams in the High Desert.
A 4-run rally in the sxith inning gave the Griffins an 8-2 lead, as the ballclub’s top fourn hitters each drovein a run by hitting a composite 8-for-13.
No. 2 hiutter Jamsyn Regas, the center fielder, led the way with three hits including a double, scoring twice.
Grossmont led 3-0 after the first half-inning on RBI from Madison Loperv (Poway) , Heidi Villa (Grossmont HS) and Hernandez.
Canyons 11, Grossmont 3
Grossmont 9, Chaffey 8
ALTRA LOMA – In a “3-way doubleheader” held at Chaffey, Grossmont was whipped by College of the Canyons, yet bounced back to party over the host POanthers.
The week ended poorly for both ballclubs, a a combined 8 errors (5 by Chaffey( led to an array of unerarned runs, invlufing tyeo by the Grigginsd in the dixth to snap a 6-7-al deadlock.

At least the Griffins capitalizedm as a 2-run double by Regas proved to be the game-winning blow, scoring Loper and first baseman Layleen Quirino (El Cajon Valley).
Shortstop Kameron McDaniel (El Capitan) batted 2-for-4 with four RBI, all coming on a grand slam in the first for a 5-0- lead. while Regas al stroked a run-scoirng single to finish with three RBI. Both also scored twice.

The lone action for the Griffins this eek will be a road doubleheader at Santa Ana on Friday. The next home contest is Tue., Feb. 17, against Santa Ana’s distrcit Rival, Santiago Canyon of Orange.
