Lorenzo Martinez
SAN MARCOS — Grossmont College guard Lorenzo Martinez is maturing more into a “circus” ringmaster than eimplyjust a basketball player.
Twice in the final minute, including the game-winning drive to the basket in traffic, Martinrez sank the game-winning, tie-breaking shot with 0.8 seconds remaining, lifting the Griffins to a sixth consecutive victory by topping host Palomar College, 81-79, on Friday (Feb, 13).
“It was a heck-of-a-shot Lorenzo made to win,” said Grossmont head coach Doug Weber. “But his last three baskets were circus, no-look shots.”
Weber noted that Martinez’s first and third shots in the late dequence were especially spectacular — worthy of the big-top.
“On those two shots, including the game-winning drive to the basket, Lorenzo flipped the ball under a defender’s arm.
Martinez, a freshman from Lompoc, Calif., finished with a game-best 20 points, followed by teammate Salem Zeid (18).
Lorenzo’s really good and the team has been playing better for a few weeks,” added Weber.”Defending it better, taking care of the ball better and being a little more efficient offensively.”
Palomar, which trailed throughout the majority of the contest before pulling even with 10 seconds remaining, had one final opportunity to win. After calling a timeout to advance the ball to mid-court, a 3-point shot at the buzzer missed.
Grossmont (9-16 overall), which was one game out of last place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, moved into fifth place at 7-7.
Palomar (17-9 overall) slipped to 9-6 in PCAC action, a half-game behind second-place Southwestern.
Grossmont’s win streak is the program’s longest since finishing second to San Diego City in 2017, when the Knights captured the CCCAA state championship. BOXSCORE
