SAN DIEGO — What a turnaround of a season it has been for the Christian High Patriots boys basketball team.
After starting the year 3-7 and losing all three games at the Father Barry Classic back in December, the Patriots are now one win away from a CIF San Diego Division I title after a 73-67 victory over Torrey Pines in Thursday night’s semifinal at the Olive Garden.
Christian (23-8) controlled much of the game from start to finish, leading wire-to-wire, but the Falcons never went away.
Torrey Pines (18-13), the No. 2 seed, cut the deficit to five points late in the fourth quarter, but the Patriots’ poise and senior leadership carried them through to a hard-fought win.
The victory marks Christian’s 16th straight win, a remarkable turnaround driven by senior stars Ronnie Scott, Juju LeBel, and Alex Williams.
Scott led the team with 21 points, LeBel added 13, and Williams chipped in nine.
Anthony Lee got the Patriots off to a fast start, scoring 12 points in the first half with smooth shooting and smart screens, while juniors Connor Kiti and Dwight McDonald provided timely contributions with eight and six points, respectively.
Tevaris Green was the engine for Torrey Pines, finishing with 27 points, including a highlight-reel alley-oop dunk to Tyler Humphrey that electrified the crowd and swung momentum back to the Falcons in the third quarter. Humphrey finished with 11 points, Chase Rogowski added 10.
The Patriots closed the game on a strong run to secure the semifinal victory.
Christian will now face No. 1 Mira Mesa in the CIF Division I Finals on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Frontwave Arena — a rematch of a February 7th matchup, when the Patriots also came out on top.
After a season defined by resilience, commitment, and a remarkable 20-1 run since December 13th, including 16-straight victories.
