LAKESIDE (3-9-26) – Strong pitching and a big home fourth inning led the El Capitan Vaqueros to a 7-1 victory over the visiting Our Lady of Peace Pilots in non-league action on Monday afternoon.
Vaqueros senior ace Makenna Burton feasted on the Pilots lack of hitting all afternoon as she only allowed two hits while fanning 11 in the complete game victory.
The only blemish on the slate came in the top of the third when the Pilots pushed across what would be their only run on an error by El Capitan.
However, that deficit didn’t last as Ciara Bernardini roped the game tying RBI double in the bottom of the third inning.
Offensively things completely changed in the bottom of the fourth as the Vaquero bats came alive as they pushed across five runs on four hits to break the game open and take a 6-1 lead. The Vaquero scoring started when Cassidy Sterling on what was the sixth pitch of her at-bat sliced a single to left field to bring home both Addison Higuera and Mckenzie Passanisi which made it 3-1. Later in the inning Sofia Simone smashed a ball to center field that rolled quite a bit which allowed Sterling to come into score and Simone to come all the way around for a two run inside the park home run.
El Capitan in the contest tallied 11 hits as a team led by Simone who went 3-for-4 while scoring three runs and driving in a pair on the inside the park home run and also stealing two bases, Isabella Farris drove in a run, Passanisi scored a run and had a pair of hits.
The victory now gives El Capitan a record of 3-1 and they will now Torrey Pines on the road in non-league play on Tuesday afternoon.
