BONITA — Following was could easily be classified as his poorest outing of the season, Grossmont pitcher Jesse McCormick definitely had something to prove on the mound.
After all, McCormick only owned a 1-2 overall record — and that way was against lowly University City — and even when he pitched well, the bats of the Foothillers bats web silent.
Everything turned around in Grossmont’s final non-league ballgame of the season Monday (Apr.), taking an impressive road victory at Bonita Vistam 2-0.
McCormich switched from his regular style of attempting to strikeout every opposing batter to instead forcing a barrage of ground balls in tossing a 1-hit shutout at the Barons.
Instead pf matching earlier totals of 8 Ks in a complete game, and 5 in 4.1 frames, McCormick posted just three whiffs. This, his complete game requires less than 100 pitches.
The Hillers (7-8) snapped the pitchers’ duel with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
After the first Grossmont run, Bonita Vista attempted to pull even on a one-out, drag bunt single by center fielder Cole Nargetts. The rolled down the first-base line, but the first baseman couldn’t make the tag and no one was else able to cover the bag.
The loss of the no-hitter nay have rattled McCormick, who hit the next batter with a pitch, moving the potential game-tying runner into scoring position. However, McCormick escaped with a pair of pop outs.
Grossmont answered with an insurance on a Barons error. A hard ground ball through the left-side of the infield by Tyler Holmes was misplayed, allowing pinch-runner Drew Sasena to come home.
Sasena was the courtesy runner for Max Tufugafale, who drew a lead-off walk.
The opening run was also unearned when a grounder back to the pitcher by Dustin Gress was thrown away,
Trevor Rhea, also a courtesy runner scored in place of catcher Rudy Gomez, who walked, then advanced when McCormic was struck by a pitch,
Gress registered two of Grossmont’s six hits, while Guerra added a hit and walked twice,
Bonita Vista fell to 11-5; this was the team;s lone ballgame against the Grossmont Conference although they dud defeat OPatrick Henry and lost at Christian.
