EL CAJON — Thirty years ago, Scott Russell was a former World Superbike and AMA Superbike Champion.
Russell was known as “Mr. Daytona” by winning the Daytona 200 a record five times — one of the most prestigious motorcycle races in the world.
This story is not about that Scott Russell, it’s about a lightly-known pitcher for Granite Hills.
Russell;s role was simple: throw an inning in spot duty is blowouts or unusually high-scoreing ballgame.
Make no mistakes, Russell will not be nominated for the all-league team, instead setting for one of various team awards offered by many programs, such as the Coach’s Award, the Hustle Award, or a citation for dedication to the team by simply being quiet, doing what your told, staying out of trouble and supporting the rest roster.
However, Russell received a gift from the Eagles coaching staff: a Senior Day starting assignment to close the regular season.
Was Russell ready? Heck, he’s been waiting two years… and he made the wait worthwhile.
Russell carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, as Granite Hills clinched a share of the Grossmont Hills League championship pasting Valhalla, 13-0, at Granite Hills Field on Thursday (May 14).
The senior right-hander only faced the minimum 15 batters through five frames, although it wasn’t a perfect game.
Full of nerves, Russell hit a batter with his second offering of the contest, but Eagles third baseman Colton Windham then started a double play.
The defensive stop was all Russell needed. He would struck out six Norsemen batters over his six innings, earning his second career varsity victory.
Jake Ervin belted a two=run homer — his third shot in 26 hours — to support a 15-hit attack. Ervin wasmatched by Anthony Miotti with two RBI. Both are also seniors.
Note: By sharing the league title with Helix,
Granite Hills now won five consecutive GHL titles, breaking the record of four set by the Highlanders (2016-19; ’20 season canceled by Covid-19).
Final Standings: Granite Hills 10-2, Helix 10-2, El Capitan 6-6, Grossmont 4-8, Valhalla 0-12.
