POINT LOMA –Missing on their opportunity to claim the Western League baseball championship at home on Senior Day, nerves might have been rattled after Point Loma took the initial lead in Friday’s (May 15) season finale.
Such a thought was anything but the truth.
The Patriots bounced back with three unanswered runs, then rode the arm of three pitchers to stop the Pointers, 3-1.
Combined with Cathedral Catholic’s shutout of University City, the Pats and Dons are tied for the league crown atof 8-2.
Brady Gunn, Elim Brum, and Lukas Waite each yielded one hit in the combined three-hitter. The staff also registered 10 strikeouts, including four by Brum (the winner) and Waite (save).
Point Loma’s axon Seiler doubled home a run in the third, but Patrick Henery immediately pulled even in the fourth.
Wyatt Lo send a hard grounder through the right-side of the diamond to bring home Ian Brooke. The deadlock was snapped in the sixth.
James Gunn and Brooke opened with consecutive lead singles, then Parks Kronk-Hawley walked to load the bases.
One out later, Lo was credited with his easiest game-winning RBI of his career with another walk for a 2-1 lead.
Moments later, Sal Gagliano sent a ground ball to third base. Instead of throwing home, the Point Loma defender attempted to turn a traditional double play, but Gagliano was safe at first base for the insurance run.
Patrick Henry (19-8 overall). the defending CIF-San Diego Section Open Division runners-up, claimed its first league title since 2023, also sharing the crown with the Dons.
The ballclub also won in 2024 by a half-game over St. Augstine. They now own four flags in five seasons, starti9ng with a pennant in 2022, when they out=lasted Christian by one game.
Point Loma (17-9-1) finished third in league at 6-4.
