LA MESA — In many seasons, the seeding of ballclubs is quite accurate.
Not in 2026.
A day after the No. 8 seeds all posted upsets n the four largest divisions of the CIF-Southern California baseball regional, one of the quartet advanced to the Southland final by posting yet another upset on Wednesday (June 3).
Kaiser High of Fontana, in its second road trip to San Diego COunty is as many days, took an early 3-0 then staved several rallied to down Helix, 7-4.
Both sides drilled a pair of home runs. but the bombs by the visiting Cats turned into the early lead. Helix answered on long-balls from Josh Rivera and Ben WIlliams, but the Highlanders fell short.
Kaiser advances to Saturday’s Division 3 final against the winner of Thursday’s ballgame between No. 2 Glendora and No. 6 Westview.
The Scotties, co-champions of the Grossmont Hills League and CIF-San Diego Section Division 2 titlists, complete the season with a 22-12 ledger.
The Cats (21-14) led 3-0 before Bryan Herman lifted a sacrifice fly in the second inning, then River sent his solo shot to left field in the third to move within 3-2.
Kaiser got the runs back on a two-run homer from Tino Isaiah in the fourth, as the ballclubs started an exchange runs without any major difference on the scoreboard.
In the seventh, Williams also went to left with a two-run homer, also scoring Kei Smith )one-out walk).
Helix followed by twice placing a runner at first base to bring the potential game0tying run to the plate. Unfortunately, the first baserunner was picked-off at first base, then Herman (walk) was stranded on base.
Angel Watkins batted 1-for-3 with a second-inning double and a walk. The center fielder finishes his senior year with 10 home runs to share the CIFSDS trophy for single-season homers.
For Kaiser, senior Tino Isaiah Cuellar and sophomore Alex Alvarado homered.
