EL CAJON – The Grossmont College baseball team bashed their way to another victory on Thursday, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings on the way to a 19-11 non-conference mashing of West LA at Noel Mickelsen Field.
Sophomore CABOT VAN TIL became the third Griffin this season to have a huge RBI day, driving in six runs from the leadoff spot.
Van Til, a Patrick Henry High grad, homered, as did sophomore DAVID MALDONADO, who has been the Griffins’ predominant No. 1 hitter this season.
Sophomore SEAN CROSBY, out of Valhalla High, got a hit, walked three times and scored three runs for Grossmont (23-6-1).
Grossmont has another non-conference game this Friday at Long Beach before the oh-so-crucial three-game Pacific Coast Athletic Conference series with second-place Palomar.
The home-away-home set for the Griffins is sure to decide the conference championship.
Grossmont is 17-1 in the PCAC, while the Comets are 15-1, giving the Griffins technically a one-game edge for the time being.
The Griffins have now won eight-straight and 18 of their last 19. Including a tie, GC has lost only one of its last 22 games.
Freshman NIKO NAVARRO had three hits and scored three times for the Griffs.
SDSU-bound sophomore MICHAEL DIFFLEY tripled in two runs in Grossmont’s four-run first.
West LA actually closed to within 4-2 after 1 1/2, but the Griffins responded with another four-spot, including a two-run shot down the right field line by Van Til.
Crosby drove in two with a double in Grossmont’s five-run fifth, then Van Til singled to left center for two more.
Seven Griffins toed the slab, including starter and winner ANDREW MITCHELL (6-1).
Freshman TIM HOLDGRAFER, who dealt in the 3rd and 4th innings, struck out four.
