Pack give ‘lights out’ performance against La Jolla

MISSION BAY (9-19-15) — Don’t turn the lights out on the 2015 West Hills Wolf Pack.
West Hills senior quarterback SPENCER MOYER threw for 236 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 115 yards and two scores as the Wolf Pack defeated La Jolla, 42-22, at Mission Bay High.

By the time the Pack closed out their Route 52 rivals, the timed lights at the new stadium at Mission Bay High clicked off with 1:42 still left on the game clock. The game started 75 minutes late.
Wolf Pack senior TYLER SEPULVEDA set the tone in the first quarter, making a jarring hit to force a fumble, which was recovered by teammate JUSTIN HANCOCK. Sepulveda followed that up with a 51-yard touchdown reception from Moyer for the opening score at 6:02 of the first quarter.
Sepulveda seemingly stopped the ensuing La Jolla drive on the doorstep of the end zone, but his interception at the goal line was ruled a safety when he was ruled to have dived back into the end zone after he semi-started a return.
Sepulveda also made the stop of a short pass completion on a fourth-down try by the Vikings on the next drive.
“All of our receivers, especially Sepulveda, did some excellent downfield blocking,” noted Wolf Pack coach CASEY ASH.
The Wolf Pack added to their lead with a 2-yard touchdown run by Moyer, who finished 14 of 23 passing.
Moyer hit TAJ BROOMFIELD with a 17-yard pass to the La Jolla 34, then found junior DYLAN HASTINGS for a 27-yard connection to the 7.
But the Vikings responded with a 4-yard touchdown run of their own on a quarterback sneak by Cole Dimich to make the score 15-9.
The West Hills’ offense ended the first half as Moyer hit AUSTIN ESTRADA for an 8-yard TD and scored on a 27-yard keeper on fourth-and-one to extend the Wolf Pack’s lead to 28-9 at halftime. Moyer had a 29-yard keeper to extend the first scoring drive, while Broomfield helped start the march with a 25-yard run.
West Hills (2-2) began the second half with a three-and-out, and La Jolla’s Joseph Duran returned the ensuing punt 65 yards to cut the deficit to 13.
The Wolf Pack answered with an 80-yard drive, capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Moyer to Broomfield, who ran an out-and-up pattern, easily beating his man, and the veteran combo connected just shy of the left front pylon for a critical score.
DANIEL ALVAREZ knocked down a would-be attempt for a defended pass in the first half for West Hills. He also scored on a 7-yard run for the Pack.
West Hills’ offensive line guided the way, led by senior left tackle CHRISTIAN RODRIGUEZ, senior center RICHARD IMBIMBO, junior right guard AUSTIN McCARTNEY, junior left guard OSCAR MORALES and right tackle ZACH WEAVER.
“This is the way we expected our offense to put points on the scoreboard all season,” Ash said. “Tonight we looked like the offensive team we thought we would be.”
And the kingpin of the attack was Moyer, who accounted for 5 touchdowns and 351 total yards.
