COSTA MESA – This coastal Orange County city is more than just the hometown of Misty May-Treanor, the three-time Olympic gold medalist in beach volleyball and star on the AVP beach circuit. It is also home to a darn good women’s softball team.

San Diego Christian College found out first-hand how good 8th-ranked Vanguard University is this season after the Lions swept a pair of doubleheaders from the Hawks. On Friday (Mar. 12), VU won 10-1 and 6-3; Saturday’s (Mar. 13) results were 8-0 in five innings and 7-3 in the  Golden State Athletic Conference openers for both schools.

Vanguard (12-4 overall, 4-0 GSAC) standout Omar Ortiz established a school record with seven RBI in Saturday’s opener, as the Lions won by run rule. Included was a bases-loaded ground out which scored two when VU caught the Hawks defense napping and the runner from second base raced home.

San Diego Christian (7-9, 0-4) reached the scoreboard first in its initial at-bat of Friday’s opener. Hannah Springs started the game with a single to center followed by a single from Alicia Corona. With runners on the corners, Noemi Farfan lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Springs from third.

But the balance of the weekend went to the Lions, which out-scored the Hawks, 31-7.

SDCC highlights:

Game 2: Surfan, the shortstop, and second baseman Lisette Mejais each batted 2-for-3.

Game 4: Springs slugged an RBI double to center field.

San Diego Christian continues the toughest portion of its schedule with a pair of twin bills next week at No. 13 Hope International in Fullerton.
