Patrick Henry 8, St. Augustine 1
SAN CARLOS — In the first of three meetings this week to snap the deqadlock for first place in the Western League, every little break seemed to go to Patrick Henry, which defeated visiting St. Augustine, 8-1, Monday (Apr. 21).
The score might have been decisive, but one could argue that several plays that were inches away from going in the other direction all seemed to land with the Patriots.
A first-inning exmaple: the Saints loaded the bases, but hard, two-out grounder to third baseman anner Helfandwas gobbled up for an inning-ending fielder’s choice.
In the home0half, the Saints also thought they had a ball to keepo the contest scoreless. However, the liner by Ian Brokks sailed past he Saints corner infielder for an RBI single to left field.
Perhaps, the most hurtful ground ball came in the fifth.
Saints relief pitcher Declan Higgins, a resident of Santee, gained his needed ground ball to start a double play. However, the ball up the middle by Brooks eluded the shortstop, allowing a pair of inherited runners to score.

It was that kind of day for St. Augustine.
Brooks, the catcher, posted a career day for Paterick Henry, driving in five runs on three hits. The junior backstop also registered a two-run single in the fourth, when the Patriots blew the contest open with a five-run rally for a 6-0 advantage.
The Saints lone run also came their catcher, NAME Miranda, driving home shortstop Jonny Haskett to avoid the shutout bid in the seventh.
Patriots pitcher Brady Gunn overcame his shaky opening inning to fire six innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits.
The series transfers to Hickman Field in northwest Kearny Mesa for Game Two on Tuesday. Patrick Henry 12-6-1 overall, 3-1 West) is a half-game ahead of Cathedral Catholci (10-6, 1-0), while St. Augustine (12-7, 2-2) droped into third.
Non-League
Clairemont 6, Steele Canyon 5
CLAIREMONT – The Clairemont Chieftaisn snapped a 2-2 deadlock with three runs in the second inning, hanging on for a 6-5 non-lrague decision over Steele Canyon on Monday (Apr. 21).
Steele Canyon chased the CLairemont starting pitcher by the third inning. But the Chieftians releiver gained a far different result.
Jackson Cleary entered and pitched the final 4.2 innings to collect the victory. Cleary struck out six Cougars batters, yielding just one unearned run that trimmed the deficit to just one run.
However, Cleary slammed the door, closing by retiring the final five Steele Canyon batters,
The Cougars led early on, 2-0, with a two-out rally in their initial trip to the plate.
A singele, a hit batter and a balk placed runners in scoring position, followed by a two-run, line drive double to right field by first baseman Gavin Caha, bringing home Logan Page and Timmy Rimoldi.
But afterward, CLearny was tougher to stop than fprmer Chicago Blackhawks left wing Daniel Cleary in hockey.
The top Cougars hitter was Caha witnd three RBI, while left fielder Caden Davey had rwo hits and an RBI in the fifth to make thing vlose.
Valley League
Escondido 5, Ramona 3
ESCONDIDO – The first round in the battle for first place in the Valley League went to the Escondido Cougars after senior pitcher Ryder Taylor fired a complete-game, 3-hitter at the Ramona Bulldogs.
Taylor struck out eight Dawgs batters, with only one of Ramona’s three runs was earned.
The Bulldogs led 3-0 throughout most of the contest behind the solid ptching of Jakob Coxen, who struck out six Cougars over five innings.
But when the leadoff batter for the Cougars reachd in the sixth, it was up to the bullpen to hang on.
However, Escondido eruptedf for five runs, inclduign a grand slam byJake Fleming.
The lone earned run for Ramona came on a solo home run by Derek Taylor.Zach Nightingale also registered an RBI. Both are sophomores/
Escondido (14-3 overall, 2-0 league) moved into sole possession of first place, but the ballclubs till eet two additional times this week.
Ramona (11-6, 3-1) stands a half-game back.hopinh to end a 4-game losing streak to the Cougars.
