#1 POINT LOMA 3, #2 WEST HILLS 2 – A late surge rally by the top seeded Point Loma Pointers highlighted by a double by Siena Balistreri in the bottom of the fifth inning that would score the go-ahead run would wind up being the difference to give the Pointers the victory on Friday afternoon out at SDSU Softball field.
Pitching was at a premium for both sides and any scoring opportunities would have to be taken advantage of in the game.
Early on in the top of the second inning West Hills would string together base runners courtesy of a one out walk to Ava Goodman followed by a hit by pitch to Amber Foley which was followed by Reegan Veltre singling to load the bases.
Now with the bases loaded and only one out things were looking good for the Pack as Kristina Deal came to the plate but unfortunately she would hit into a fielder’s choice in which Goodman was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning. Still with two out and bases loaded Kiara Rabaya would draw the second hit by pitch of the inning that would bring home Foley to give them a 1-0 lead.
West Hills in the top of the fourth inning would extend their lead when Deal roped a double to center field to bring home Foley which made it 2-0.
Unfortunately, behind multiple hits in the bottom of the fourth including a double by Leyton MacPherson that scored two runs the game would be all tied up at 2-2.
Giana Burgin drew the start for West Hills and on the day she struck out seven over four innings of work in which she allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in the loss, Goodman who came into the game in relief tossed two innings in which she walked one and struck out two.
On the other side for Point Loma, Ella Poulin who got the win went all seven innings in which she allowed two runs (two earned) on four hits while walking four and striking out two.
West Hills with the loss sees their five game winning streak snapped and finishes their season with a record of 20-10-1.
Point Loma with the victory extends their winning streak to four games in a row and move their overall record to 25-6-1 and they will now wait for Sunday when Regional Playoffs will be determined.
The Pointers win their first ever CIF Softball Championship in the programs fifty-one years since 1974 when it started under Lois Craig who coached from 1974 to 2000 when she retired from teaching etc.
