SANTEE – Following the best season in school history, the Santana Sultans are off to another fast start after capturing the Steele Canyon Tournament over the weekend, then raised their early-season record to 5-0 overall with a 3-set sweep of Grossmont.
The Sultans, led by senior outside hitter Brooklynn Draheim, posted a near-perfect record to sweep Saturday’s (Aug. 16) tournament. Along with taking both sets from the host Cougars, Santana raced to 2-0 wins over Clairemont and El Centro-Central, then many of the Sultans’ reserves took a 2-1 decision over Oceanside.
The Tuesday (Aug. 19), Santana posted a 3-set verdict over an improved Grossmont side, surviving an ear;y extended set e.g..
“overtime”), 26-24, 25-23, 25-8.

Brooklynn Draheim
Although no official all-tournament team was selected by the Steele Canyon officials, Draheim was tabbed the event’s most valuable player by the attending media.
Draheim was joined by Madison Fortuna, another Sultans senior. Both serve as Santana captains.
The all-tournament libero was Santana junior Makenna Castle, a junior.
In addition, the spiking leader for the Sultans was Ally Russell, who averaged six kills per match.
In 2024, Santana posted a 22-8 overall record, including a 9-1 mark to capture the Grossmont Valley League championship.
In postseason action, the Sultans advanced to the second round of the CIF state tournament.
Under head coach Tim Cool, who is in his 10th season with the program, the team currently owns a 5-0 mark heading into Thursday’s (Aug. 21) showdown on the road against a strong program in Coronado.
First serve against the Wahines (or Islanders) from Blumenthal Sports Complex on the island is at 6:30 p.m.
