SPRING VALLEY — For two seasons, senior Nico Jara has been one of San Diego County’s most explosive playmakers. Friday night, he reminded everyone why, igniting Steele Canyon’s offense and special teams in the Cougars’ 23-13 victory over Ramona.
Jara opened the game with a statement, returning the season’s opening kickoff for a touchdown, immediately setting the tone. Later, he added a 28-yard touchdown reception, showing why he’s been a consistent game-changer for Steele Canyon in his career.
“I expected nothing less from our team,” Jara said. “We just need to fix some things up and we will be unstoppable.”
Despite his standout performance, Jara and his teammates are emblematic of a team-first culture. Most of Steele Canyon’s stars routinely go overlooked because the program emphasizes collective success over individual recognition. That philosophy hasn’t stopped Jara from consistently producing big plays.
Ramona answered with an 18-yard touchdown reception by Darius McCall, but the Cougars maintained control with a strong defensive presence and timely execution. Quarterback Gavin Caha threw a key scoring pass and keep drives alive and set up points, complementing Jara’s dynamic contributions.
The Cougars’ defense also pressured Ramona throughout, including a sack on the first series and a goal-line stop later in the game. Steele Canyon added a field goal in the first half and controlled the clock in the second half to secure the 10-point margin.
Zarius Pascual and Trace Kelly scored the touchdowns for Ramona.
Jara’s performance reaffirmed his status as one of the county’s premier playmakers.
Steele Canyon officially opened their new press box on Friday night — a shiny new perch for the media and staff to occupy since covering the Cougars has been a challenge for reporters since the school opened in 2000 due to the tight confines above the field and the fact that the team is famously tight-lipped, preferring to do their talking on the field, rather than seek notoriety.
