Los Angeles — The Grossmont Griffins continued their scorching start to the 2025 season with a commanding 42-15 road victory over LA Southwest on Saturday.

Following a season-opening 64-0 rout of Compton, Grossmont improved to 2-0.

The Griffins wasted no time asserting themselves, scoring three first-quarter touchdowns to set the tone.

Quarterback Melvin Spicer IV, coming off a record-setting Week 1 performance that earned him SCFA Offensive Player of the Week honors, orchestrated the early surge.

Spicer capped a 5-play, 64-yard drive with a 28-yard touchdown run on Grossmont’s opening possession.

Just minutes later, the defense struck with Titus Toilolo returning an interception 47 yards for a score to push the lead to 14-0.

Elijah Realzola then hauled in a 41-yard strike from Spicer, closing the first quarter scoring at 21-0.

Grossmont’s momentum carried into the second quarter with two more touchdowns.

Spicer connected with Jaden Moore on a 1-yard scoring pass, followed by Adrien Chargualaf’s 49-yard interception return, putting the Griffins ahead 35-0 at halftime.

LA Southwest finally found the end zone in the third quarter when King Grant caught a 21-yard pass from Jack Nyman, with a successful two-point conversion narrowing the gap to 35-8.

The Cougars added another score in the fourth quarter on Trayshawn Jones’ 2-yard run, but Grossmont responded immediately with Realzola catching an 11-yard touchdown pass from Spicer, sealing the 42-15 win.

Statistically, the Griffins dominated in key areas despite LA Southwest slightly outgaining them in first downs (Grossmont 19, LA Southwest 24).

Grossmont amassed 356 total yards, including 275 through the air and 81 on the ground.

Spicer finished 20-of-33 for 275 yards and three touchdowns, distributing the ball to a host of receivers while keeping the Cougars’ defense off balance.

Realzola was Spicer’s primary target, finishing with six receptions for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while Jordan Benton added 67 yards on three catches.

The defense delivered a statement performance, forcing three interceptions and returning two for scores, while applying consistent pressure on Nyman with six sacks totaling 36 yards lost.

Grossmont’s special teams also contributed, with Abdikadir Ali posting a 38-yard average on kickoff returns and Tyler Haley converting all six extra points.

With this victory, Grossmont heads into Saturday’s road matchup against 2-0 Antelope Valley with confidence.

The upcoming clash is expected to be a tight battle, as the Griffins (ranked 32nd in this week’s CCCAA poll) look to continue their undefeated streak against a familiar rival positioned just ahead in the rankings.

Spicer and Realzola, who have already connected for three touchdowns over the first two games, are expected to be key factors once again.
