OCEANSIDE – Helix High was unable to sustain the momentum from its first win of the season last week, falling 41-14 to Oceanside in the renewal of their long-dormant rivalry Friday night.
The Highlanders (1-3) last met the Pirates in 2014, but Oceanside made up for lost time, using a fast start and balanced offense to control the contest and hand Helix its third loss of the season.
The setback now sets up a difficult challenge for the Highlanders, who host No. 4 Cathedral Catholic next Friday in a Gauntlet Series matchup at Hart Stadium.
Helix showed early fight, answering Oceanside’s opening touchdown when sophomore running back Bryson Calloway broke free for an electrifying 80-yard scoring run late in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7. But that would prove to be the Highlanders’ lone offensive highlight of the first half.
The Pirates surged ahead with a short rushing touchdown midway through the second quarter, then capitalized after Helix turned the ball over on downs late in the half. A quick-strike touchdown pass in the closing minute sent Oceanside to the locker room with a 21-7 lead.
Helix’s offense struggled to find rhythm after halftime, while Oceanside extended its advantage with two third-quarter touchdowns, including a missed extra point that still gave the Pirates a commanding 27-7 cushion. The margin grew to 34-7 before Helix struck again.
In the fourth quarter, junior quarterback Caden Thompson connected with sophomore Jeremy Robinson for a 41-yard touchdown, trimming the deficit to 34-14. Robinson was the Highlanders’ top performer, finishing with five catches for 110 yards and the score.
But Oceanside, behind sophomore quarterback A. Barquinero’s sharp passing, closed out the win with a final touchdown late in the fourth, sealing a 41-14 result.
Helix’s offense produced 246 total yards, with 110 coming on the ground and 136 through the air.
Calloway led the rushing attack with 90 yards on 12 carries, while Thompson was efficient in relief at quarterback, completing three of four passes for 75 yards and the touchdown. Senior starter Lee Norman-Lester threw for 61 yards and added 20 on the ground but also tossed an interception.
On defense, junior Jeremy Davis led the Highlanders with seven total tackles, while seniors Angel Herrera and sophomore Jace Sells each added five stops.
The defeat marked just the second time Helix has started 1-3 in nearly two decades. The Highlanders will now try to avoid their first 1-4 start since 2005 when they return home to face Cathedral Catholic in a locally televised game.
