LANCASTER – The Grossmont College Griffins came within seconds of keeping their unbeaten start alive, but a last-second field goal by Antelope Valley lifted the Marauders to a 38-36 win on Saturday night at Brent Carder Stadium.

Grossmont (2-1) opened the game on fire, putting up 16 first-quarter points behind the big arm of sophomore quarterback Melvin Spicer IV. After Tyler Haley drilled a 48-yard field goal on the Griffins’ first possession, Spicer found Elijah Realzola for an 80-yard strike on the next drive. Moments later, he connected with Ayden Billups on a 14-yard scoring toss as Grossmont surged ahead 16-6.

But the Marauders (3-0) clawed back, capitalizing on short fields and the rushing of Niam Bankhead and John Sanders to score 15 straight points in the second quarter, sending Grossmont into halftime trailing 21-16.

The second half turned into a shootout.

Antelope Valley stretched the lead to 29-16 early in the third, but the Griffins immediately responded when Myles Norman sprinted in from 17 yards out just 17 seconds later.

The Marauders answered with another touchdown, only for Grossmont to grind out an 11-play, 75-yard drive capped by Spicer’s one-yard sneak to close the gap to 35-29.

With just over four minutes to play, Norman powered in for his second rushing touchdown of the night, a two-yard score that gave the Griffins a 36-35 lead and seemed to set the stage for a dramatic road victory.

Grossmont’s defense, led by Jaiden Vaquera (10 tackles, 2 tackles for loss) and Lincoln Chukwuemeka (10 tackles), had already forced three turnovers on downs, but Antelope Valley’s final drive proved decisive.

With 10 seconds remaining, Lucas Bailey knocked through a 19-yard field goal to send the Marauders to a 3-0 start.

Statistically, Grossmont nearly matched Antelope Valley in a game that featured over 1,000 yards of combined offense.

Spicer passed for 350 yards on 19-of-33 attempts with two touchdowns, spreading the ball around to Realzola (116 yards, 1 TD), Billups (110 yards, 1 TD), and Jaden Moore (76 yards). Norman paced the ground attack with 89 rushing yards and two scores, while Spicer added a rushing touchdown of his own.

Grossmont’s defense was on the field for nearly 46 minutes, but still created big plays. Vaquera, Chukwuemeka, and Keanu Pettiford (10 tackles, pass breakup) anchored a unit that recorded eight tackles for loss.

Zyier Lane’s 47-yard interception return highlighted the Griffins’ special-teams spark, which also included a 79-yard kickoff return from Isaac Syph. Haley contributed a 48-yard field goal.

Despite the loss, Grossmont showed resilience, erasing deficits of 13 and 12 points while displaying an explosive offense that has taken a major leap forward this season.

Grossmont will look to bounce back next week at home against L.A. Valley (1-2).
