2025 EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL
LA JOLLA 41, CHRISTIAN 24
EastCountySports.com
LA JOLLA — Christian High’s challenging schedule continued on Friday night as the Patriots fell 41-24 to the La Jolla Vikings, extending their losing streak to five games.
Despite flashes of strong play, Christian came up short against a talented La Jolla squad, falling to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in Eastern League play.
Christian got off to an early start when Jacob Kirchhoefer tackled a Vikings runner in the end zone for a defensive safety following a 45-yard squib kick from quarterback Kaleb Runkle.
Christian led 2-0 after that play, one of the few moments the Patriots were ahead.
Runkle, who finished the game with 159 passing yards on 10 completions from 24 attempts, also rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown on seven carries, showing his dual-threat ability.
Kai Rosier had a standout performance as well, hauling in five receptions for 115 yards and a touchdown, while Soren Lucey contributed another receiving touchdown.
Julian Morones added 38 rushing yards and 29 receiving yards, giving the Patriots 297 total yards in the contest.
Despite these individual efforts, La Jolla quickly seized momentum in the second quarter.
A 15-yard touchdown pass and a subsequent extra point miss put the Vikings on the board at 6-2.
Christian’s misfortune continued on the kickoff, as a fumble at their own 23-yard line was recovered by La Jolla, leading to a 5-yard touchdown pass that extended the lead to 13-2 by halftime.
The Vikings dominated the second half with a series of explosive plays.
La Jolla freshman quarterback Ty Tortorice completed 17 of 23 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns, while Aiden Farrell powered the ground attack with 194 rushing yards on 23 carries, scoring once and adding 50 receiving yards. Nicolas Bardaro contributed in multiple ways, rushing for a touchdown, catching a touchdown pass, and returning a blocked punt for a score. Carson Diehl added two touchdown receptions, further highlighting the Vikings’ balanced attack.
Christian’s defense fought hard, with Kirchhoefer, Everick Randall, and Chase Togerson combining for key tackles, and the team recording nine tackles for loss. However, turnovers and La Jolla’s opportunistic special teams proved decisive. La Jolla also registered three sacks, including two by Bardaro and one by Joseph Crudo, which disrupted several Christian drives.
The Patriots’ offensive line and skill players continued to push forward, but La Jolla’s combination of a strong running game, efficient passing, and big-play ability proved too much.
Christian totaled 125 rushing yards as a team, with Runkle and Morones leading the way, while Rosier and Lucey accounted for 128 receiving yards. Still, the Patriots were unable to convert yardage into enough points to threaten the Vikings’ lead.
Looking ahead, Christian will travel to face Scripps Ranch at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, seeking to end its losing skid and build momentum.
La Jolla, meanwhile, will host Lincoln at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
Both teams may be feeling the effects of a fast-paced, high-yardage game, as Friday’s matchup saw a combined 812 yards of offense. For Christian, the focus remains on resilience and learning from tough matchups against strong opponents.
