EL CAJON – The West Hills Wolf Pack’s mid-season turnaround continued Friday night with a gritty 17-7 victory over Valhalla on the Norsemen’s Homecoming.

After opening the season with five straight losses, the Wolf Pack have now won two in a row — both in Grossmont Valley League play — to climb to 2-0 and into instant contention in the league race.

The win was West Hills’ first on the road this season and extended their dominance in the series, marking their fourth straight victory and seventh in the last nine meetings against Valhalla.

The 24 combined points made it the lowest-scoring game between the schools since 2001, when West Hills won 15-6 — also on Valhalla’s Homecoming — and tied the 21-point total from their first-ever matchup in 1989, which Valhalla won 14-7.

West Hills (2-5 overall, 2-0 GVL) again leaned on a physical defense and balanced offense to secure the win.

Junior quarterback Evin Dill completed 9-of-15 passes for 97 yards and ran for 30 more, directing the Wolf Pack to 137 total rushing yards while the defense forced five turnovers.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Wolf Pack broke through early in the second when Jacob Romeo scored on a 2-yard run to cap a sustained drive that began in the opening period. Christian Slojkowski’s PAT gave West Hills a 7-0 lead.

Valhalla (1-6, 0-2 GVL) answered moments later with one of its few offensive highlights — senior Marcus Martinez caught a short pass over the middle, spun away from a tackle, and raced down the right sideline for a 51-yard touchdown that tied the game 7-all.

The Wolf Pack had a chance to regain the lead late in the half following a fumble recovery by junior Marcus Leath at the Valhalla 43. A pass interference penalty moved the ball inside the 20, but a 34-yard field goal attempt missed wide, sending the teams to halftime even.

The defenses dominated the third quarter, with Brody Shartel leading the Norsemen with 13 tackles and Lorenzo Matos and Giacomo Lupo adding eight each.

But midway through the fourth, West Hills finally broke through.

Dill hit Brayden DeAngelis on a 17-yard pass to the 1-yard line, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Zack Marticorena. Slojkowski’s kick made it 14-7 with under six minutes left.

West Hills then capitalized on another turnover when a deflected Valhalla pass was intercepted by Scotty Miller, setting up Slojkowski’s 40-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-7 in the closing minutes.

The Wolf Pack defense finished the night with authority as Cameron Kirkpatrick recorded a sack and E.J. Lee and Michael Ware added interceptions to preserve the victory.

Romeo (10 carries, 24 yards, TD) and Marticorena (4-26, TD) scored both Wolf Pack touchdowns, while Diego Serrato contributed 42 yards rushing and a 16-yard reception. Romeo added two catches for 32 yards.

The victory puts West Hills in prime position entering next week’s matchup against rival Grossmont, with both teams 2-0 in Grossmont Valley League play — a meeting that will heavily influence and likely decide the season’s league title.
