Matadors finish strong, crush Vaqueros

Spring Valley – No. 11 Mount Miguel turned in a dominant performance Friday night, defeating El Capitan 42-10 in a Grossmont Hills League matchup.

The Matadors improved to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Vaqueros dropped to 4-6 and 0-4 in the GHL.

Both teams will head into the SDSCIF playoffs with byes in their respective divisions: Mount Miguel in Division 1 and El Capitan in Division 4.

Mount Miguel quickly seized control, scoring 28 unanswered points in the first half to put the game out of reach.

Junior quarterback Jeremiah Loper was nearly unstoppable, completing 8 of 13 passes for 280 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for a career-high 49 yards and a touchdown. Loper showcased his versatility with a trick-play touchdown, catching a 1-yard pass from wide receiver Gianni Porfilio, who finished with four receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

The Matadors’ passing attack spread the field effectively.

Brandon Arrington contributed a 45-yard touchdown reception, while Tmarrion Williams added a scoring grab of his own.

Senior Aj Logan was another key offensive contributor, hauling in four catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground, Loper’s 49 rushing yards and score highlighted Mount Miguel’s balanced attack, which totaled 443 yards of offense for the game.

Defensively, Mount Miguel was equally effective. Khalonie Jordan and Tmarrion Williams each intercepted passes, helping to keep El Capitan from mounting any sustained comeback.

The Matadors’ aggressive defense limited the Vaqueros to just 207 total yards, including 127 passing yards and 80 rushing yards.

Despite the loss, El Capitan had standout individual performances.

Sophomore quarterback Hayden Passanisi passed for 127 yards on 11 of 19 attempts and added 88 rushing yards, showing the dual-threat ability that has carried the Vaqueros throughout the season.

Michael Castillo also made his mark with a 1-yard rushing touchdown.

Mount Miguel’s win marked their second consecutive victory, averaging 35 points across those two games and solidifying their position as one of the top teams in the county, heading into the Division 1 playoffs with a top-four seed.

El Capitan, meanwhile, faces the playoffs on the heels of a four-game losing streak but remains a strong postseason contender in Division 4, where it will get a first-round bye into the quarterfinals.

So despite a winless regular season in the Grossmont Hills League, the Vaqueros are an instant section championship contender in the Division 4 playoffs.
