EL CAJON — For three quarters, the Grossmont College Griffins went toe-to-toe with a surging San Bernardino Valley team fighting for the American Pacific League title. But a fourth-quarter surge from the Wolverines — capped by a defensive touchdown — sent Grossmont to a 30–13 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Mashin-Roth Field.

The loss dropped Grossmont to 5–4 overall and 1–3 in league play, while SBVC improved to 6–3 and 3–1, keeping its title hopes alive.

It was a defensive grind early, with SBVC’s kicker Johnathan Lupercio hitting a 31-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Grossmont answered midway through the second when Tyler Haley booted a 25-yarder to tie it 3–3. After another Lupercio field goal, Haley matched him again just before halftime, drilling from 36 yards out to make it 6–6 at the break.

After halftime, both offenses found some rhythm. SBVC quarterback Roman Aguirre connected with Jason Harris Jr. on a 10-yard score just 1:40 into the third quarter, but Grossmont punched right back as quarterback Melvin Spicer IV capped a determined eight-play, 67-yard drive with a 1-yard keeper to tie the game 13–13.

From there, San Bernardino Valley’s stars took over. Aguirre hit Harris again — this time for a 38-yard strike with just over three minutes left — to give SBVC a 20–13 lead. On the ensuing drive, Asaad Chapman sealed it for the Wolverines, stepping in front of a Spicer pass and racing 35 yards to the end zone. Lupercio added one more field goal in the closing minutes to complete the scoring.

Despite the loss, Grossmont moved the ball effectively for much of the afternoon, outgaining SBVC in first downs (22–15) and time of possession (32:16–26:13). But mistakes and penalties — 12 for 147 yards — proved costly.

Spicer completed 21-of-39 passes for 172 yards and added a rushing touchdown, while freshman Ayden Billups threw for 17 yards and caught seven passes for 95 more. Darick Dubose Jr. ran for 86 yards on 16 carries, and Tyler Haley was steady in the kicking game, going 2-for-2 on field goals and averaging 36 yards per punt.

Defensively, linebacker Sy Fanua led the Griffins with eight tackles, and Jaiden Vaquera had an interception and 28-yard return. Rashad Scott added a sack, and Paris Dixon broke up a pass.

Grossmont will close out its regular season next Saturday on the road, looking to finish above .500 overall after another competitive campaign under head coach Mike Jordan.

Mesa Rallies Late to Stun Mt. San Jacinto, 35–31

MENIFEE — San Diego Mesa College (6–3, 3–2) pulled off one of the wildest finishes of the weekend, rallying from a two-touchdown halftime deficit to defeat Mt. San Jacinto 35–31 on the road.

Trailing 28–14 at halftime, Mesa stormed back behind quarterback Nick Sharpe, who threw a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to Aleonte Logan — from 35 and 31 yards — to tie the game. After MSJC briefly regained the lead with a field goal, Makai Gray-Virgil delivered the play of the night, returning the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for the go-ahead score with four minutes left.

The Olympians’ defense sealed it with two late interceptions as Mesa earned its sixth win of the year, setting up a strong finish in National Southern League play.

Southwestern Falls to hot Saddleback, 48–7

MISSION VIEJO — Southwestern College (6–3) struck first but couldn’t sustain the momentum in a 48–7 loss at Saddleback, which rolled to its sixth straight victory.

Quarterback Brayten Silbor opened the game with a 30-yard touchdown strike to Josiah Jefferson, giving the Jaguars an early 7–0 lead. But from there, it was all Bobcats, who scored 48 unanswered points thanks to a dominant ground attack and a pair of defensive takeaways.

Silbor finished with 151 passing yards, while Jefferson caught four passes for 71 yards and the lone score. Jamarei Ashby-Phan led the team with 25 rushing yards. Southwestern will look to rebound in its regular-season finale next week.

Palomar Snaps Skid with 31–27 Road Win

RANCHO CUCAMONGA — The Palomar Comets (2–7) broke through in impressive fashion, topping Chaffey 31–27 behind a career day from quarterback Jakob Harris, who threw for 397 yards and three touchdowns.

Harris connected on touchdown strikes of 48, 48, and 98 yards — the last to Hunter Stowe, marking the second-longest play in program history. The Comets’ defense forced five turnovers, including four interceptions, and held firm late to secure the win.

Receiver Furious Hoskins caught six passes for 102 yards, while Bubba Garcia had two interceptions on defense. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak and showcased Palomar’s playmaking potential heading into the final week of the season.
