TORRENCE – After a challenging start to the 2025-26 campaign, the Grossmont Griffins finally found their rhythm, earning a 98-84 victory over the El Camino Warriors at the ECC Gym Complex on Wednesday.
The win marks the Griffins’ first of the season (1-3), a promising step forward for a team looking to rebound from a tough 2-26 season last year. Last year, Grossmont lost at home to the Warriors, 61-59, so this reversal should prove as a point of growth for this season.
Freshman guard Lorenzo Martinez, of Lompoc, led the way for Grossmont with a near triple-double performance, scoring 22 points, grabbing nine rebounds, and dishing out nine assists.
Sam Mews added a sharp shooting display for the Griffins, knocking down five three-pointers on his way to 17 points, while teammate Tre’ Stonebraker chipped in 14 points and six rebounds.
Grossmont sophomore guard Micah Whitley also had a strong outing with 11 points and six assists, contributing to the balanced offensive attack.
Grossmont jumped out to a 48-31 lead at halftime and never looked back, maintaining a steady second-half advantage to secure the win.
El Camino got 19 points from Rocco Gaffoglio and 15 from Kai Johnson, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Griffins’ hot shooting. Grossmont finished the night shooting 52.5% from the field and an impressive 56.3% from three-point range.
Head coach Doug Weber, at the helm of Grossmont since 1998, surely emphasized the significance of this early-season victory. Last year, the Griffins didn’t notch a win until January 22, so picking up a bit of a statement win early over an El Camino squad that beat them on their home floor last season is a confidence booster for the club.
The Griffins have faced tough early-season opponents, including losses to Mt. San Antonio (88-36), Copper Mountain (74-62), and LA Harbor (87-80), but the balance of experienced players like Martinez and rising contributors like Stonebraker, Mews, and Whitley shows promise moving forward.
Grossmont returns to action on Dec. 2 at Desert before hosting the Grossmont Tournament Dec. 5-7.
