DIVISION 2: STEELE CANYON 21, SAN DIEGO 10
EastCountySports.com
SPRING VALLEY — Steele Canyon is headed back to the CIF San Diego Section Division 2 championship game for the first time since 2017, powered by a disciplined defensive performance and the continued rise of senior receiver Jacob Henton.
Henton delivered his biggest performance of the season as he hauled in two touchdown receptions—from 23 and 32 yards. The sudden impact he has made late in the season has become one of Steele Canyon’s defining stories, as his timing and chemistry with quarterback Gavin Caha have flourished at the finish this season.
Henton’s first touchdown came late in the opening quarter after the teams traded early interceptions—San Diego’s Kye Cooper grabbed one, and Steele Canyon’s Noah Ramirez answered with a takeaway of his own to halt a Cavers drive.
Caha capitalized quickly, finding Henton in stride down the right side to give the Cougars the early lead.
Steele Canyon extended the advantage to 14–0 midway through the second quarter after blocking a 35-yard field goal attempt and turning the short field into points.
Running back Abel Lopez capped an eight-play march with a short touchdown run.
San Diego managed to cut the deficit to 14–7 just before halftime, but that would be the last time the visitors reached the end zone.
From there, Steele Canyon’s defense controlled every meaningful snap.
The Cougars’ front repeatedly disrupted the Cavers’ timing, finishing with three sacks—one each from Tyree Zarkaryan, Donte Brown, and Cameron Buchanan—and tightening the secondary coverage to keep San Diego’s big-play threats contained.
The Cavers were limited to a single touchdown despite entering the night riding back-to-back playoff upsets.
Steele Canyon finally put the game out of reach midway through the fourth quarter, flipping a failed San Diego fake punt into instant offense.
Two plays after the stop, Caha hit Henton deep again, this time on a 32-yard strike that pushed the lead to 21–7 and sent the home crowd into celebration mode.
With the win, Steele Canyon improved to 9–3, securing its second straight postseason victory and earning a berth in next Friday’s Division 2 championship game at DeVore Stadium.
The Cougars will face top-seeded Santa Fe Christian, the only undefeated team left in San Diego County, a team known for its stingy defense (allowing just 11.7 points per game), in what is expected to be a physical, low-scoring battle.
San Diego closed its season at 7–6 after a spirited playoff run, but Friday belonged entirely to Steele Canyon—a team peaking in all three phases and now one win away from another CIF title.
