SPRING VALLEY – In a career full of firsts, former Mount Miguel High standout Christine Fitzgerald has accomplished another significant first.

Upon reporting for work later today (Dec. 15), Fitzgerald will become the first woman to become head coach of a Grossmont Conference boys basketball program.

Fitzgerald, 43, will be replacing Jimmy Hurst, who stepped down late last week because of reported health issues.

Fitzgerald was the starting point guard for the Matadors when her brother, former Mount Miguel coach Robbie Sandoval, began his state record streak of 23 consecutive league basketball titles within the Grossmont Conference.

During those first three seasons, Fitzgerald was named to the All-East Country first team each season, capped by a pair of East County Player of the Year citations —  the first to do so in the 21st Century following the 2001-02 and 2002-03 campaigns, finishing qs one of the region’s all-time leading scores.

Most recently, Fitzgerald coach one season for Lincoln (2023-24).
