SAN DIEGO CIF GIRLS BASKETBALL – PLAYOFFS
Division 4 First Round – Tuesday’s game
SANTANA 57, CORONADO 20
CORONADO – Santana left no doubt Tuesday night.
The ninth-seeded Sultans stormed into the Blumenthal Events Center and overwhelmed No. 8 Coronado 57-20 in the opening round of the Division 4 playoffs, seizing control just minutes after tipoff.
Santana (16-12) exploded for a 20-4 first quarter and never looked back. The Sultans extended the margin to 31-7 at halftime before delivering the knockout blow in the third, outscoring the Islanders 23-2 to stretch the lead past 40.
Sophomore Sam Mora led a balanced Santana attack with 19 points, while Brynn Warren added 10. Olivia Magneta finished with seven, and Chawan Shiro, Harper Diaz and Ashlyn Darrow each chipped in six as the Sultans spread the scoring throughout the lineup.
Coronado (9-13) struggled to generate offense against Santana’s pressure defense.
The Islanders managed just seven total points in the first half and were held to single digits in three of four quarters. Maria Anaya paced Coronado with seven points, while Izzy Guymon added six.
The Sultans’ defensive intensity Tuesday marked one of their most complete efforts of the year.
Next up, Santana advances to face top-seeded Hilltop (19-6), a team that went 11-1 at home and defeated Del Lago 54-32 in its opener.
