At University City: It’s a rec rod most schools would envy. But at Christian, such a start is simply not acceptable. So pitcher Walker Kane did something about it.

The Patriots avoided their first 0-3 start in a decade after Kane closed Friday’s (Mar. 6) tournament contest with four inninfs of no-hit relief, leading the Pstriots past the host Centurion s-0.

Among his 12 outs on the mound, Kane registered nine of thek n strikeouts. Throw in the three strikeouts each by starter Talon Brown and winning pitcher Kyler Lybarger, the C-Pats casheed in 15 K;s on the Cents among the 21 outs,

Thus, the trio cvombined on a 2-hitter to hit the win column for the first time this season.

On offense, Christian figured out the UC pitching on the second time through the batting order, scoring three times in the third inning, all courtesy of senior Benji Molina on a 3-run, no-doubt homer deep over the left-field fence.

Lybarger and Brown also addedRBI hits toinvrease the lead.

Between the school’s (boys) basketba team making the state playoffs. a round of flu going through the campus, and there was an out-of-state wedding,” noted Mitchell.”We’ve had only one day — just one — of practice as a full unit this seasom, And we don’t expect evryone to be here until after our fifth game at the earliest.”

Thus, the slow start was expected, yet the pitching staff came through to cash-out the Cents and end the mild losing streak.

Mitchell reviewed Friday’s (Nar, 6) arms.

“Talon a freshman, is coming off basketball, so he is on a pitch count as we build up his stanina. He had three strikeouts i 1.2 innings.”

Mitchell also noted the strong perforace by Lybarger. a returnee to the varsity, nut pffered added praise to jos newcomers/

“”Walker Kane is only a sophomore, yet threw the last four innngs, striking out nine while facing just 14 batterstp get the save.”

Much more is anticipated over last season’s toops whch finished fifth in the rugged Eastern League.

Mitchell added, “When we finally get our entire team together and on the field, we will be much improved.”

Note: Last season,Mitchell’s troops also downed University City, giving the veteran skipper 600 career victories.
