Comets sweep Griffs, hold PCAC advantage

SAN MARCOS — It’s a mathematics quandary.

In simplist of terms, in order for 16th-ranked Grossmont College to capture the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship, the Griffins need to sweep all 15 remaining PCAC contests.

The reason: 5th-ranked Palomar, which entered the week in a first-place deadlock with the Griffins, swept the 2-game series to move to 10-0.

Thus, Grossmont, which swept all other PCAC foes, will need to do so again — in 3-game sets, not just 2-game series — then sweep the season-ending, 3-game series with the Comets to gain the crown.

The mission may sound impossible, but as long as the Griffins match Palomar for every win (or loss) over the next four weeks, the season could come down to a showdown series to determine the champion.

At Fletcher Hills: There were a remarkable five plays at the plate in Tuesday’s (Mar. 17) series opener at Noel Michelson Field.

All three Grossmont baserunners were safe at the plate; both Palomar baserunners were nailed at the plate on throws from the outfield.

Still, despite the Griffins holding a 5-2 lead thanks to a pair of home runs, the Comets jumped on the bullpen for a 12-1 scoring run to easily rally.

Talon Tucker sent an opposite-field shot to right field for a 2-0 lead in the second.

Palomar pulled even iu the third, the opening run coming on the first of two home runs by first baseman Michael Rodda.

However, a 3-run shot from designated hitter Anthony Thomas moved the G-House back into the lead.

However, five members of the bullpen struggled, as Palomar answered with rallies of nine and seven runs.

On Thursday (Mar. 19), Grossmont third baseman Gavin Brown drove in three runs, while leadoff batter Drew Frost slugged a pair od doubles, but Palomar scored in each of the five innings to mount a 10-5 advantage. BOXSCORE
