POINT LOMA –Missing on their opportunity to claim the Western League baseball championship at home on Senior Day, nerves might have been rattled after Point Loma took the initial lead in Friday’s (May 15) season finale.
Such a thought was anything but the truth.
The Patriots bounced back with three unanswered runs, then rode the arm fof three pitchers to stop the Pointers, 3-1.
Combined with Cathedral Catholic shutout of University CIty, the Pats and Dons are the league crown with marks of 8-2.
Brady Gunn, Elim Brum and Lukas Waite each yirled one hitin the combined three-hitter. The staff also registered 10 strikeouts, incuding four by Brum (the winner) and Waite (save).
Point Loma’s axon Seiler doubled home a run in the third, but Patrick Henery immediately pulled even in the fourth.
Wyatt Lo send a hard grounder through the rifhr-side of the diamond to bring home Ian Brooke. The deadlock was snapped in the sixth.
James Gunn and Brooke opned with consecutive lead singles, then Parks Kronk-Hawley walkedto load the bases.
One out later, Lo was credited with his easist game-winning RBI of his career with another walk for a 2-1 lead.
Moments later, Sal Gagliano sent a ground ball to third base. Instead of throwing home, the Point Loma defender attempted to turn a traditional double play, but Gagliano was safe at first base for the insurance run.
Patrick Henry (19-8 overall). the defending CIF-San Diego Section Open Div ision runners-uo, claimed its first league title since 2023, also shring the crown with the Dons.
The ballcub also won in 2024 by a half-game over St. Augstine. They now own four flags in five seasons, starti9ng with a pennant in 2022, when they out=lasted Christian by one game.
Point Loma (17-9-1) finished third in league at 6-4.
