JAMUL — With a single swing of the bat, Steele Canyon’s Austin Hall hit the ignition switch for the Cougars.
Trailing 5-0, Hall drilled a lead home run to the “Great Wall of Jamul” in left field to place the hosts on the scoreboard. And when an error brought home a second run, Hilltop entered the seventh inning with a 5-2 lead.
Although the Landers scored twice more, Steele Canyon soared back with four additional runs, but fell just short in Monday’s (May 18) Division 3 play-in, finally falling to the Lancers, 7-6, in CIF-San Diego Section playoff action.
The Cougars, undisputed champions of the Grossmont Valley League, end their season with a 13-16 overall record. Hilltop (13-17) earned the 11th seed in the main draw, which opens Tuesday,
There were a rare pair of play-in games in Division 3. In the other half ot the bracket, Rancho Buena Vista broke a deadlock with a run in the seventh to walk-off Olympian, 4-3, to gain the 12th seed.
