CARMEL HIGHLANDS — CslHiSport has ranked Cathedral Catholic as high as third in the state this season.

The Dons also receive among the most television and newspaper coverage as the largest private high school in San Diego County.

To the Patrick Henry Patriots, this is old news, so the intimidation factor doesn’t exist.

Even though Cathedral Catholic captured the ballclub’s playoff meeting last week, the Patriots made sure the road to the Open Division title game would not be so simple.

On Tuesday (May 26), Patrick Henry rolled totals of 18 runs in 18 hits, at inw ooinr mounting a 13 -1 advantage to steam past the Cons, 18-1 at Winchester Ballfield.

The triumph levels the season series at 2-2. The teams split a pair of Western League contests to share the pennant, and with a split of CIF-San Diego Section playoff tilts, a playback final will be necessary to determine one of the two Open Division finalists.

Patrick Henry was such a ballclub last season, but fell to unbeaten Granite Hills in the finale.

Game stuff

Jimmy Gunn and Parks Kronk-Hawley each delivered four RBI, as the first two innings took more than an hour with the Patriots ahead, 7-3.

The first five runs came home on Gunn’s RBI double, a two-run Ian Brooke basehit, then a two-run homer by Jayden Goldman to straightaway center field.

Gunn capped the Patriots’ scoring with a three-run bomb to right field in the sixth.

For Patrick Henry (22-9 overall), the trio of Gunn, Kronk-Hawley, and Brooke registered three hits each; Cathedral Catholic, as a team, mustered just eight.

The Dons (26-5), which also fell to Division 2 finalist Helix earlier this season, easily allowed a season-high in runs.

Previously, Bonita Vista scored seven — the Patriots more than doubled that total — while Granite Hills, Santa Fe Christian and Simi Valley posted six.

The playback final to determine the victor in the upper bracket is slated for 4 p.m. Wednesday, also at Cathedral Catholic.

Divisioion 3
Ramona 13, La Jolla 3
At Ramona: Although admitting that our access to archives on the Ramona Bulldogs is limited, it seems the school has only once won consecutive CIF championships — and it came before the state created the San Diego Section.

In the fall of 1958 and 1959, the Dawgs took home back-to-back CIF-Southern Section small-school crowns in football, posting a composite record of 23-0.

The San Diego Section was created for the 1960-61 season; the firstfootball champions were Mount Miguel and Escondid on Dec. 5, 1960.

Two-thirds of a century later, Ramona can replicate the feat when play in the CIFSDSDivion 3 basbell championship. The Daqgs advanced to the title game was suring over visiting La Jolla, 13-3, on Tuesday (May 26).

Last season, Ramona claimed the Division 4 crown, gaining elevation to D-4status for the current campaign.

Game stuff

Ramona (22-8 overall) scored on all six trips to the plate, going 1-2-2 and 2-2-4 per inning to pull away from the Vikings (17-16).

Noah Bedia led the attack with a pair of doubles, driving home a team-best three runs.

Tallon Ogilvie also smacked a pair of doubles among his three hits, while Zach Nightinggale and Colton Simpson had two RNOI each. Nightingale also scored three times.

Meanwhile, Ramona pitcher Alex Wilson carried a shutout into the fifth inning. Wilson struck out six Vikings batters, then Connor Schwettmann mopped up with 1.2 frames of shutout relief.

The triumog avenges an 8-5 tournament loss to La Jolla on April 2.

Ramona will meet Avocado League rival Westview in Friday’s championship contest.

Division 4
Foothills Christian 4, El Centro-Central 2
At El Centro: Six innings of a shutout call was
interrupted in the fourth, when Foothills Christian out-scored El Centro-Central, 4-2 — the final score, which allowed the Knights to forge a playback final to determine a Division 4 final in the CIFSDS baseball championships.

Johannes Anssen Granillo belted a two-run single, while Trevor Cochrum registered another RBI in the fateful fourth.

Foothills Christian pitcher “Captain” Jack Morgan struck out five Spartans batters for his complete game.

Morgan allowed just five hits, three when ECC answered back. However, Morgan closed with 3.1 frames of one-hit ball for the triumph.

The Kniights (21-12 overall) return to the valley for the playoff final against Central (11-18-1) on Wednesday at 4 p.m., bidding for a date in the D-4 title game.
