SAN DIEGO (6-5-26) – The saying of “Third times a charm” really came to fruition on Friday afternoon as the fifth seeded Grossmont Foothillers exploded for eleven runs in the fifth inning to really put away the top seeded Madison Warhawks by a score of 15-3 in five innings to claim the CIF Division IV semifinals on the road.
Previously the Grossmont Foothillers were on the other side of victory to the Madison Warhawks including the Division 4 section championship game a week earlier and a non-league contest early on in the regular season.
Despite trailing 2-0 after two innings of play the Foothillers offensively came alive thanks to Saraya Roope doubled in a run and Madison Busch with one drove in a pair and would score on an error by Madison to give them a 4-0 lead.
Leading only a run 4-3 in the top of the fifth inning Foothillers once again came alive as Busch doubled in a run, Drew Winchester drove in a run, Juliana Short drove in a run, Jaidyn Jacques drove in a pair of runs, Saraya Roope walked to bring home a run, another RBI base hit by Busch, Sahara Roope drove in two runs, and Winchester finished things out with a two run double.
Sahara Roope who is only a freshman drew the start for the Hillers and she went out and limited the Warhawks who usually scored runs to only three (two earned) on five hits over seven innings in which she walked three and struck out two.
Grossmont with the win snaps the Warhawks five game winning streak and in the process claims their second straight victory and ninth of the last ten outings. The overall record for the Foothllers moves to 20-11-1 and they will now hit the road for a long road trip to Woodlake to take on the second seeded Woodlake Tigers who come in with a 30-4 overall record and a 20 game winning streak.
