Patriots let off the gas early, cruise to Central title

EL CAJON (5-22-15) — It could have been worse. Central League champion Christian High pounded out 11 hits and scored all 12 runs in the first two innings, and then emptied the bench in Thursday’s (May 21) regular season finale.

After that Christian went into glide control in what resulted in a 12-4 victory over visiting Lincoln. The victory hoisted the Patriots’ record to 25-2 overall and 12-0 in league activity.

All 17 Patriots played and 11 of them contributed to the 13-hit onslaught.

“The kids from both teams had a lot of fun,” said Christian coach MIKE MITCHELL, noting that Lincoln did all of its scoring in the 7th inning.

JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD continued his hot hitting over the last seven games with a 1-for-2 effort. During that span he batted .700 (14-for-20) with 12 RBI.

WILL HAIL returned from a recruiting trip and made an immediate impact, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBI, which ballooned his season average to the .500 mark (35-for-70). Hail also had 28 RBI including 3 in the finale.

CHASE WEHSENER pitched 3 shutout innings to earn his 2nd win as many decisions. As a batter he was 2-for-4 with 3 RBI and a stolen base.

Christian has locked up the No. 1 seed in the San Diego Section Division 3 playoffs on Wednesday (May 27) against a team to be determined. The playoff pairings will be released on Saturday (May 23).

MISSION BAY 9, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 2 — Mission Bay’s Jacob Casson scattered seven hits across 6 1/3 innings of work. The junior right-hander struck out 10 while not giving up any walks in a masterful performance, leading to a Buccaneers 9-2 victory in a non-league contest on Thursday (May 21).

Foothills Christian junior KONNER VON DER LIETH (L, 5-1) suffered his first loss of the year going six innings and allowing seven runs (five runs earned). Von Der Lieth struggled all day allowing six hits and seven walks during his performance.

Casson stymied the Knights (21-5) bats as he struck out as previously mentioned 10 batters. Over the course of the third through the fifth innings, seven of the ten batters were victims of the “K”.

The Knights will now wait to see what seed they will get in the Division IV playoffs on Saturday (May 23).

Granite Hills, El Capitan and Santana all claim Grossmont crowns

By Bill Dickens

EL CAJON (5-21-15) — In the showdown between the top two teams in East County, Granite Hills upended Helix on Wednesday (May 20) in the Grossmont Hills League regular season finale to claim the league pennant.

The teams entered the contest tied for first place, but Granite Hills garnered an 8-2 victory to register its fourth straight GHL championship.

“We take a lot of pride in that,” said Granite Hills senior third baseman JORDAN VERDON, who blasted his 4th home run of the season in the 5th inning in the Eagles romp over Helix.

“It feels good to have won four league championships since I’ve been at Granite Hills,” said Verdon.

LEE MUTTER slugged his 6th round tripper with a man aboard in the 4th inning to give the Highlanders the early 2-0 lead. However, that would be all the runs the Highlanders would muster.

Granite Hills tied the game in the bottom of the 4th on a bases loaded single by DARIAN COSSIO.

An inning later the Eagles put 5 runs on the board to put the game away.

SANTANA 3, WEST HILLS 2 (8 inn.) — Officially Santana tied El Capitan for the Grossmont Valley League championship at 13-2. When it comes to Grossmont League patches, the two teams were declared co-champions.

However, when it comes to playoff berths, the top seed will go to Santana because the Sultans won 2 out of 3 contests with the Vaqueros.

In the bottom of the 8th inning of Wednesday’s (May 20) encounter with West Hills, Santana snapped a 2-2 tie on back-to-back doubles by AIDAN RASMUSSON and JERRY ALESI.

EL CAPITAN 5, MOUNT MIGUEL 1 — First year El Capitan coach CLAYTON CURO celebrated a share of the Grossmont Valley League championship as his Vaqueros knocked off Mount Miguel 5-1 in Wednesday’s (May 20) regular season finale.

El Capitan finished in a 13-2 tie for first place with Santana.

“All I know is this is the fifth championship we’ve had in six years,” Curo said. “My goal when I took the helm was to stay competitive.”

El Capitan barged into the season with 15 juniors and 4 seniors.

“To come out as well as we did in a strong race is a special feeling,” Curo said.

During the season El Capitan put together an 11-game winning streak.

DYLAN WANNAMAKER (3-0) turned in a complete game effort to put the Vaqueros in the victory circle as he scattered 7 hits, one run, walked none and struck out 3.

SAM MELERO, probably the best leadoff hitter in East County, was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored.

The Vaqueros tied the game at 1-apiece in the 3rd inning on a single by VICTOR CARLINO.

El Capitan took the lead in the 5th inning as Melero doubled and scored on a basehit by JASON MOORMAN to put the Vaqueros ahead 2-1.

VALHALLA 5, GROSSMONT 3 — DOMENIC DONATO slugged a 3-run homer to left field in the 1st inning, scoring LEWIS DIRKES (single), JEFF HOUGHTBY (walk) and himself to take the early lead in Wednesday’s (May 20) Grossmont Hills League contest for the Norsemen to finish in third place tied with the Foothillers at 6-6.

In the 3rd inning COLE HENDERSON grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Houghtby for Valhalla’s fourth run. Henderson finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Grossmont got on the scoreboard in the 5th inning when BRAEDEN BARR hoisted a sacrifice fly to score TIGER GUERRERO and MICHAEL BYERLINE singled to score EVAN McCARTHY.

In his last three games Byerline has batted .455 (5-for-11) with 2 home runs and 9 RBI.

ANDY VAN ANTWERP scored the Norsemen’s fifth run in the 5th inning on a Henderson single.

Byerline also drove in the Foothillers’ final run on a single to center in the 7th frame, scoring pinch runner BAILEY VAN EVERY.

Henderson pitched the first four frames to earn his 3rd win in five decisions. GARRET YOCOM came on in relief to earn his 3rd save.

MONTE VISTA 13, EL CAJON VALLEY 2 — A 7-run first inning propelled the Monarchs to a lop-sided victory over the Braves on Wednesday (May 20) in a Grossmont Valley League revenge encounter.

Monte Vista has a shot to grab fourth place in the GVL.

TYLER WILLIAMS paced the Monarchs with a 3-for-5 effort that produced 3 RBI. He also had a double and a stolen base

Newcomer CHRIS STALLARD was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Monte Vista pitchers JUAN GUTIERRIEZ (1-0) allowed one run and 3 hits in three innings before Stallard came on to finish the job, allowing one run in three innings.

Titles on the line, four teams but only two titles are available

By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (5-20-15) — Two Grossmont Conference championships are up for grabs in Wednesday’s (May 20) contests which will have an impact in the stretch run.

In the Grossmont Hills League, Helix and Granite Hills share 8-3 circuit records and a winner will be crowned in Wednesday’s regular season finale when the two face off on the Eagles’ diamond at 4 p.m.

On the other side of the conference coin, El Capitan and Santana are deadlocked at 12-2. Santana will host West Hills and El Capitan will entertain Mount Miguel in Wednesday’s encounter at 4 p.m.

Should the Vaqueros and Sultans each come away with a victory, a co-championship will ensue. If either team stumbles, the nod will go the other way. Should each team end the season with a victory, history will show the league record as a tie.

However, Santana will get the inside nod for playoff consideration, having beaten the Vaqueros 2 out of 3 contests for the season series, but for the record they will be co-champs.

GROSSMONT 9, GRANITE HILLS 8 (9 inn.) — For the second time in 24 hours Foothillers coach JORDAN ABRUZZO and his crew pulled a major upset over the top two teams in East County.

No championships are forthcoming for the Foothillers, however, but their impact may decide who wins what.

In the bottom of the 9th with the game deadlocked at 8-all, the Foothillers started a late rally. JONAS BUCHANAN slashed a leadoff single and two outs later ADAM LOPEZ singled to left and BRAEDEN BARR hammered a walkoff double for the game-winning RBI.

“This was one of the craziest games I’ve ever been a part of,” said Abruzzo of Tuesday’s (May 19) Grossmont Hills League showdown. “We had them pinned down 7-0 after three innings but they were able to battle back. It’s hard to take a challenge like that and then regroup.”

Bottom line is the Foothillers are on their way to the Division I playoffs no matter whatever else.

EL CAPITAN 9, WEST HILLS 8 (9 inn.) — El Capitan captured the extra innings contest as CLAY CROMWELL reached base on an infield single, advanced on a sacrifice by KEN OHLHAUSER and scored on a walkoff double by DAWSON McCLANAHAN to keep pace with Santana Tuesday (May 19) for the Grossmont Valley League lead.

The Vaqueros would have gone down to upset in the 7th inning had it not been for McClanahan’s RBI single.

West Hills exploded for 5 runs in the 6th inning with the key blow being JOEY KRUG’s grand slam. Krug finished 2-for-4 with 6 RBI.

“He hit a 2-0 elevated fastball and it was a no doubter,” said Vaqueros coach STEVE VICKERY.

McClanahan finished 2-for-2 with 3 RBI for the Vaqueros.

SANTANA 8, MONTE VISTA 0 — DAULTON BARRY pitched a complete game 3-hitter with 7 strikeouts Tuesday (May 19) to keep the Sultans on pace for the Grossmont Valley League championship. He is 5-1 against league competition and 5-5 overall.

In the 4th inning the Sultans put the game away with 6 runs. Seven of their 11 hits came in that frame, including a pair of singles and one RBI by JERRY ALESI.

REECE HERNANDEZ was 2-for-4 with 2 runs, while TRISTEN SALINAS was 1-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.

CHRISTIAN 17, LINCOLN 1 — Third-ranked Christian, the Central League champions, rocked Lincoln with a 17-hit attack, using an assortment of reserve players as well as starters in Tuesday’s (May 19) contest.

Usually locked into the No. 9 batting slot, JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD in his last six games has batted at a .722 clip (13-for-18) with 11 RBI and 6 runs scored. He’s also clubbed 2 doubles, a triple and a home run in the Patriots’ their bid to San Diego Section supremacy.

The Patriots took a 14-1 lead after four innings in their final bout with the Hornets of Lincoln High. Ledgerwood was 3-for-4 with a home run and 5 RBI.

ZACH HOGUEISSON was 2-for-2 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored for Christian, which also got a triple and 3 RBI from BRYCE JURRIES.

Eagles break out of slump in victory

By Bill Dickens

RANCHO SAN DIEGO (5-19-15) — Known for its heavy hitting in the past, Granite Hills was all but silenced this season.

However, the Eagles finally found their groove as they slapped Steele Canyon 8-2 in Monday’s (May 18) Grossmont Hills League victory to break out of a hitting drought. The score was a season high for the Eagles.

Granite Hills scored all 8 runs in the first three innings, so it looked like it was going to be a bonanza. But it wasn’t.

“I know people don’t believe it, but this was our game scoring high,” said Granite Hills coach JAMES DAVIS. “We’ve been in a slump for about two months, but we finally hit the ball hard.”

JORDAN VERDON was 1-for-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI for the Eagles.

DANIEL VASQUEZ pitched a complete game 3-hitter for Granite Hills with one walk and 4 strikeouts.

GROSSMONT 10, HELIX 6 – Some might call this an upset but it certainly had an impact to the Grossmont Hills League standings, as Grossmont upended Helix on Monday (May 18).

The Foothillers’ 10-6 victory over the Highlanders knocked Helix out of the GHL lead and leaves Granite Hills alone at the top. However, the two teams will collide on Wednesday (May 20), which could have further ramifications.

Grossmont battered the Highlanders to keep their league championship hopes alive.

“This was a must-win for us,” said Grossmont coach JORDAN ABRUZZO. “If we win at least two of our last three games we could wind up champions. If we win at least one game, we’ll at least be co-champions.”

The game featured four home runs – Grossmont’s MICHAEL BYERLINE homered in the 3rd inning with two aboard for his 3rd round tripper and ADAM LOPEZ slugged his 3rd homer in the 7th.

Helix’s LEE MUTTER slammed his 6th homer in the 5th with one on and DaSHAWN KEIRSEY slugged his 3rd home run in the 4th inning.

MOUNT MIGUEL 5, WEST HILLS 0 – Unheralded ENRIQUE KELLER continued to stun the East County in Monday’s (May 18) 3-hitter with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts in shutting out the Wolf Pack in a Grossmont Valley League contest.

“We didn’t make any errors and Keller didn’t walk anybody,” noted Matadors coach LLOYD “LB” HAVIRD. “We played good defense and the guys made good plays.”

In the 5th inning when Mount Miguel got on the scoreboard, West Hills pitcher STEVEN TILLEY had a no-hitter going. With two outs JOEL SANDOVAL hit a double. JOHNNY NICASIO singled, followed by a JAKE CASTILLO single that scored Sandoval and Nicasio.

“When Sandoval hit that big time hit in the 5th, all of a sudden Tilley wasn’t invincible any more,” said Havird.

In the 6th ALEX ESTRADA led off with a triple. Keller hit a sacrifice fly to score him and ERIC DE LA ROSA singled and stole second base. MIGUEL OROZCO singled to score De La Rosa.

In the 7th inning CONNER WHITE walked and Estrada doubled. A wild pitch scored White. A suicide squeeze attempt by Keller turned into a 3-5 double play.

EL CAPITAN 3, MONTE VISTA 1 — The El Capitan Vaqueros took one more step towards securing a top two position in Division 2 in the upcoming CIF-SDS playoffs after defeating Monte Vista 3-1 on Monday (May 18) at Monte Vista’s Marv Lacy Field.

on the Photos page.

It was a very balanced attack for the Vaqueros (20-7, 11-2 GVL) as six different players had a hit in the Grossmont Valley League contest.

Through the first third of the game it was close, real close, like 1-1 close. El Capitan got on the board in the top of the third. DAWSON McCLANAHAN reached on an error. MICHAEL LARWA pushed him over to second on a sacrifice bunt. DALTON JENNINGS allowed him to advance to third on a ground out. SAM MELERO then knocked him in with a single to shortstop.

The Monarchs (10-16, 4-9 GVL) came back in the bottom of the inning. With one out NOAH KIRCKOF doubled to left field. TYLER WILLIAMS then knocked him in with a single to right to tie the game up.

The Vaqueros’ MYLES EMMERSON singled to left. That was followed by a JASON MOORMAN single to push Emmerson to second. CLAY CROMWELL was hit by a pitch to load the bases. MARSHALL CHAMPLIN grounded into a double play.

The fifth inning saw Larwa leadoff with a single. Jennings sacrificed himself to get Larwa to second. Melero moved him over to third on a ground out. VICTOR CARLINO brought him in on a single up the middle.

El Capitan will host West Hills on Tuesday (May 19) and Mount Miguel to close out the regular season. Monte Vista travels to Santana (also on Tuesday) and El Cajon Valley to close out their regular season.

CHRISTIAN 4, SERRA 2 – No. 3 ranked Christian continued its charge for the best record in the San Diego Section by wrapping up the championship in the Central League on Monday (May 18).

There are numerous teams out there that don’t believe that Christian High is as good as its record. However, there are also those who check out the scoring points to back up the fact that the Patriots are 23-2, 10-0 in league.

Bottom line is only La Costa Canyon and Rancho Bernardo are ranked above the Patriots.

The Patriots clipped Serra behind the pitching of NATHAN JARVIS and CAMDEN BESSONE.

“We were on the edge every inning,” said Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL. “We never got them out 1-2-3. We were behind in the count a lot today, but the pitchers made good pitches when they had to with runners in scoring position.

“This is the first time we have ever swept Serra in all three games.”

SANTANA 9, EL CAJON VALLEY 2 – BRANDON MOSBURG allowed only one hit in six innings and struck out 8 to guide the Sultans past El Cajon Valley in Monday’s (May 18) Grossmont Valley League game.

CHRISTIAN MENDEZ was 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI to pace Santana.

Not to be overlooked was MITCHELL MILLER who was 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored for the Sultans (14-10-1, 11-2).

Sophomore rookie NOAH JACKSON was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI for Santana in his varsity debut against the Braves.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 14, LINCOLN 1 – A 9-run second inning propelled Foothills Christian to Monday’s (May 18) non-league victory over the Hornets at Barona.

DANIEL LUCKETT slashed 2 of his 3 triples in the game in the 2nd frame.

EZRA SIMS smacked 2 singles in 3 at-bats during the onslaught.

Luckett finished 4-for-5 with 3 triples and 4 RBI to pace the Knights (21-4). The veteran catcher for the Knights also had a 2-run triple in the 3rd and an RBI single in the 6th.

Sims hit 4 consecutive singles in 5 at-bats before being put out.

BAILEY LINK, who pitched four innings to earn his 4th win in five decisions, was also 3-for-5 with 2 RBI and a pair of doubles in the Knights’ leadoff spot.

Not to be overlooked was TIM GRAY who was 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Donato and Henderson push the rain away just long enough

By Bill Dickens

RANCHO SAN DIEGO (5-15-15) — While the majority of the East County baseball teams stood in their dugouts watching the raindrops, postponing Thursday’s (May 14) scheduled action, Valhalla and Steele Canyon managed to dodge the inclement weather as the Norsemen clipped the Cougars 13-6 in a Grossmont Hills League game.

The visiting Norsemen made a statement early on, scoring 6 runs in the 1st inning. Valhalla led 9-6 after five frames before breaking the game open with 4 tallies in the 6th.

It was clearly muddy to the coaches and the players, who managed to beat the storm.

Valhalla (11-13-1, 5-6 GHL) was propelled by home runs from DOMENIC DONATO and COLE HENDERSON. Donato swatted a 2-run shot in the 1st inning and Henderson slugged a solo blast in the 4-run 6th.

It was one of the better offensive explosions for the Norsemen, who nailed 14 hits off Steele Canyon pitchers.

Until the final two innings Steele Canyon made a game of it. JOHNNY DELUCA stroked 3 hits in 4 at-bats while driving in 2 runs and scoring 2 for the Cougars (7-19, 2-10 GHL).

Valhalla slashed 4 doubles, including one by GARRETT YOCOM who blanked the Cougars on 4 hits through 3 1/3 innings. The victory raised Yocom’s record to 4-0.

El Capitan clinches share of GVL Title

By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
LAKESIDE (5-14-15) — El Capitan jumped on top of Santana 3-0 in the 1st inning and held on in Wednesday’s (May 13) Grossmont Valley League showdown for a 6-0 victory and a share of the circuit title.

However, as excited as the Vaqueros were, Santana won 2 out of 3 in the season series although the two teams are tied in the league standings. Each has three games remaining but do not face off again during the regular season.

Both will claim a league championship but on paper that won’t be the case. That doesn’t seem to matter because the teams will still be co-champs.

SAM MELERO ignited the first inning rally for El Capitan as he was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second base on a bunt by VICTOR CARLINO and scored on a base hit by MYLES EMMERSON. DAWSON McCLANAHAN also singled in a run.

Back-to-back hit batters, a walk and a squeeze bunt by McClanahan in the 5th inning staked the Vaqueros to a 4-0 lead.

TRISTAN DUNCAN pitched a complete game 2-hitter for the Vaqueros (20-6, 10-2).

“I don’t know if I’d say this was my best game but it was definitely one of my better games,” said Duncan.

“My curveball was really crisp today,” said the senior right-hander, who hoisted his record to 5-2. “We’re in the position we want to be at this point in the season.”

El Capitan collected only four hits to claim the key victory. Now it’s a matter of holding on to the lead for the Vaqueros, as well as the Sultans.

GRANITE HILLS 4, VALHALLA 1 — No question that Granite Hills is famous for its heavy hitting, but this season the Eagles have struggled and have had to depend on their pitching.

Pitcher KENNY LaPIERRE (4-2) gave a powerful effort against Valhalla, allowing only one earned run and 5 hits while striking out 10 in 6 2/3 innings of Wednesday’s (May 13) Grossmont Hills League showdown.

DANIEL VASQUEZ got the final strikeout for the Eagles (13-8, 7-2) to earn the save.

In the 2nd inning Granite Hills grabbed the lead as ANDY LOWRY hit a single and then stole second base. He advanced to third on an error by the shortstop which put Vasquez on base. SEAN ROSS then singled to right to score Lowry and stake the Eagles to a 1-0 lead. Ross advanced on a wild pitch and ANDREW BROWN was hit by a pitch. DARIAN COSSIO singled to left, scoring Vasquez. IZZY GOMEZ grounded into a double play, scoring Ross.

The Eagles tagged on another run in the 4th. With one out Ross was safe on an error, then advanced to second on another error and moved to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on another wild pitch.

It took Valhalla until the 6th inning to get on the scoreboard. ANDY VAN ANTWERP was hit by a pitch, JEFF HOUGHTBY singled to right and stole second. COLE HENDERSON singled to left, scoring Van Antwerp for the Norsemen’s sole run.

BROCK MOSIER pitched a complete game 4-hitter for the Norsemen.

HELIX 7, STEELE CANYON 1 — CONNER KONISHI pitched 6 innings, allowing only 4 hits, one run (earned), walked one and struck out 7 and raised his record to 8-1 in Wednesday’s (May 13) Grossmont Hills League in La Mesa.

STEVEN ALBA and MATTHEW RICHARDSON each drove in 2 runs to guide the Highlanders to an early lead as Steele Canyon fell behind 4-0.

JOE TOILOLO logged 4 RBI for Helix as did Alba.

Helix took the lead in the 1st inning as MATTHEW RICHARDSON reached base and stole second. Konishi singled and drove in a run.

In the 2nd inning Alba slashed a 2-run single.

WEST HILLS 23, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 — The Wolf Pack came out swinging against the El Cajon Valley Braves on Wednesday (May 13), putting up 14 runs in the first inning en route to a 23-0 Grossmont Valley League win.

Senior NATE LEDFORD led the Pack with 4-for-4, one double, 3 runs and 2 RBI. Senior BRYCE GIBSON also had a solid game going 3-for-5 with a double, 3 runs and 4 RBI. Senior RYAN CULP chipped in going 4-for-5 with 4 runs and 3 RBI.

In total the Wolf Pack hitters banged out 21 hits.

Senior right-hander JOEY KRUG cut through the Braves line-up pitching a complete game (5-IP), surrendering only 1 hit while striking out 12.

MONTE VISTA 4, MOUNT MIGUEL 2 — The Monarchs came out hot on a cloudy day at Mount Miguel on Wednesday (May 13) to defeat the Matadors 4-2 in a Grossmont Valley League contest.

TYLER WILLIAMS went 3-for-4 on the day to pace the Monarchs (10-15, 4-8 GVL) offense. AUSTIN CAOLE went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the fourth inning.

Williams led the game with a single to right center. Caole followed that with a single to center to put runners on first and second. ANDREW GONZALES (1-2, 2 BB, RBI) brought in Williams with a single for a 1-0 Monte Vista lead. DIEGO SANDOVAL (1-2, BB) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move runners to second and third. But they would be stranded in those positions.

In the second, the Monarchs showed how good their two out rally system works. JUSTIN SCHWEIZER (1-3, run) got on with a single. Williams got a hit in consecutive innings. Caole walked to load the bases. Sandoval welcomed in a relief pitcher with a two run single to increase the Monarchs lead to 3-0.

Caole flexed his muscles with a solo shot to left field to put the Monarchs up 4-0.

In the bottom of the fourth the Matadors (11-14, 5-7 GVL) got on the board. ALEX ESTRADA (2-3, run) singled with one out. ENRIQUE KELLER (1-3, run) singled to put runners on first and second. ERIC DE LA ROSA (1-3, RBI) singled up the middle to bring in Estrada to cut the Monte Vista lead to 4-1, with runners on the corners. CONNER WHITE (1-3) grounded out to first, that brought home Keller and cut the lead to 4-2.

As much as they tried the Matadors couldn’t get any closer.

JUSTIN SCHWEIZER pitched a complete game for the Monarchs on his way to his first win.

Mount Miguel will travel to El Cajon Valley on Friday, while Monte Vista will travel to Santana.
— Chris Davis

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 3, ARMY-NAVY 2 — Foothills Christian scored the winning run with one out in the bottom of the 7th inning of Wednesday’s (May 13) Ocean League contest.

The Knights got on the board in the 4th inning as DANIEL LUCKETT slammed a home run on the first pitch.

KONNER VON DER LIETH singled to right center in the 6th, and one out later Luckett slugged a triple to score Von Der Lieth.

In the final frame TREVOR SMALLWOOD singled up the middle over the send baseman’s head but was wiped out on TRISTIN BARLING’s fielder’s choice. LIAM CAREY pinch ran for Barling. BAILEY LINK got a base hit and Von Der Lieth got a hit to load the bases. RYAN QUINN reached on an error to score Carey with the winning run.

Foothills Christian clinched the title in the Ocean League.

Chalk up another championship for the Patriots

By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
EL CAJON (5-13-15) — The Christian High Patriots clinched the championship of the Central League by outslugging Serra High 18-11 on Tuesday (May 12).

The Patriots took a race horse start with 9 runs in the 1st inning, but as they came to the plate in the bottom of the 2nd they were trailing the Conquistadors 10-9.

The Patriots put the game away in the bottom of the 2nd with a four spot and never looked back after that. The two teams combined for 25 hits.

CAMDEN BESSONE finally put the brakes on the Serra offensive explosion, twirling five innings allowing no earned runs and five hits while striking out 3 to earn his second win in three decisions.

“That was an impressive job by Camden,” said Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL.

Batterymate WILL HAIL slashed 4 hits in 5 at-bats while driving in 4 runs. His totals included a pair of doubles.

Second baseman CHRISTIAN MEZA continued his steady hitting by going 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI.

Leadoff man TREVOR HOWELL turned in another strong performance with 2 hits and 2 stolen bases for the Patriots (22-2, 9-0). He scored 4 runs and drove in a pair.

WEST HILLS 10, MONTE VISTA 0 — West Hills got a strong pitching performance and the Pack bats came alive in Tuesday’s (May 12) Grossmont Valley League make-up game.

West Hills senior right-hander STEVEN TILLEY (3-3) pitched a complete game 2 hit shutout on his way to striking out 8 Monte Vista batters.

The Wolf Pack offense was led by senior right-fielder DONOVAN McCRYSTAL who went 3-3 with a sacrifice fly, a double and 2 RBI. Junior first baseman SPENCER MOYER chipped in with a 2-4 performance that included 2 doubles and 3 RBI.

Senior centerfielder ALEX SCALCO scored 3 runs going 1-1 with 2 walks while stealing 3 bases.

Wolf Pack catcher AARON BARKLEY was 2-3 while NATHAN LEDFORD was 2-4 with 2 runs scored.

In total the Pack banged out 13 base hits on its way to a 10-0 victory.

Monte Vista’s only hits were by TYLER WILLIAMS and AUSTIN CAOLE.

The Pack turned the game into a blowout with back-to-back 4-run innings in the 3rd and 4th frames.

EL CAJON (5-12-15) — Helix senior DeSHAWN KEIRSEY came within one out of logging a no-hitter in Monday’s (May 11) Grossmont Hills League contest between the visiting Highlanders and Valhalla at Eric Turgeon Field.

With two outs in the bottom of the 7th, Valhalla’s COLE HENDERSON slashed a single to right field to spoil Keirsey’s no-hit bid.

Keirsey walked one and struck out 10 in the Highlanders 5-0 shutout of the Norsemen.

In his last two starts Keirsey twirled shutouts. He has three shutouts on the season.

“We’re playing right where we want to be right now,” said Helix coach COLE HOLLAND. “You start at one step early in the season in hopes of reaching the mark of where we are right now (16-7, 7-2 GHL).”

JACK STRONACH was safe on a fielder’s choice in the 1st inning and scored when LEE MUTTER reached on an error for Helix’s early lead. Stronach scored the Highlanders second run in the 3rd inning his single to right and Keirsey’s double to left.

In the 6th inning STEVEN ALBA single to right and scored on CONNER KONISHI’s single to center.

In the 7th Keirsey was safe on a bunt single and moved to second on a wild pitch. HUNTER ISBELL was safe on a sac bunt and Keirsey scored on an error. One out later JOE TOILOLO doubled to left, scoring Isbell.

WEST HILLS 4, MOUNT MIGUEL 3 — In a makeup game from May 1 due to the tragic death of Wolf Pack Cross Country student-athlete RYAN WILLWEBER the Wolf Pack came from behind to take down the Matadors 4-3 on Monday (May 11) in Grossmont Valley League action.

ENRIQUE KELLER (1-3, HR, 3 RBI) put the Matadors (11-13, 5-6 GVL) up early with a three run home run to left that was a no doubt about it gone. That brought in JOHNNY NICASIO (1-4, run) and JAKE CASTILLO (1-3, run).

West Hills (9-14, 4-6 GVL) got on the board with a single run in the fourth inning. SAMMY SANDEZ (0-3, 2 runs, SB) reached on an error and then stole second. RANDY JEWELL (1-4, RBI) brought him in on a single.

The sixth inning saw the Wolf Pack scratch back to a tie. AARON BARKLEY (2-3, run) got things started with a single. ZACH SANDOVAL (0-3) hit a fly ball that was dropped by the right fielder to move Barkley to second. Sandez hit into a fielder’s choice to erase Sandoval. After another out, DONOVAN McCRYSTAL (2-4, SB) singled to bring in Barkley and Sandez.

In the top of the seventh, KRIS AGUILAR (3-4, run) singled to get things rolling. As a side note Aguilar reached base in all four plate appearances on Monday. NATHAN LEDFORD (1-3) pushed Aguilar over to second on a base hit. Barkley walked to load the bases. Pinch hitter RYAN CULP singled to bring in what would prove to be the winning run in Aguilar.

After a rough first inning junior left-hander GABRIEL SHUBERT pitched a scoreless second giving way to junior left hander CLAYTON LEWIS who tossed three scoreless innings, surrendering only 1 base hit while striking out 3. BRYCE GIBSON (1-0) came in to finish the last two innings, collecting the “vulture” win and tossing two scoreless innings. He gave up only 1 base hit and struck out 1.
— Chris Davis

GROSSMONT 4, STEELE CANYON 1 — Grossmont rode the arm of sophomore JACKSON HULETT who pitched a complete game 2-hitter with 4 strikeouts in Monday’s (May 11) Grossmont Hills League action.

The Foothillers took a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning as CALVIN FARRIS and MICHAEL BYERLINE drew back-to-back walks and both scored on wild pitches.

Grossmont expanded its lead to the 5th inning as EVAN McCARTHY singled and stole second. ADAM LOPEZ singled and drove in McCarthy.

CHRISTIAN 5, CLAIREMONT 2 — Junior hurler JOHN GERSHOW allowed only 2 hits and 1 run in 6 1/3 innings as the Patriots closed in to winning the Central League title on Monday (May 11).

CAMDEN BESSONE got the final 2 outs to lock up the victory for the 21-2 Patriots.

JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD was 3-for-3, including a pair of double to lead the Patriots’ offensive attack.

EL CAPITAN 17, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 — In another Grossmont Valley League blowout the Vaqueros pinned the Braves to the mat on Monday (May 11) in Lakeside.

El Capitan hammered out 17 hits in the lop-sided victory over the Braves.

CLAY CROMWELL was 4-for-5 with 3 runs and 7 RBI for the Vaqueros.

De La Rosa shuts down powerful Santana Offense

SANTEE (5-10-15) — The Mount Miguel Matadors pulled off a major upset in a rain makeup game on Saturday (May 9) as they upended front-running Santana 5-3 in a Grossmont Valley League game.

Mount Miguel (12-12, 5-5) received powerful pitching from ENRIQUE KELLER and ERIC DE LA ROSA who combined on a 4-hitter. De La Rosa twirled the final six innings and did not allow a run.

It was a key victory for the Matadors, who closed their one-time 2-game lead over El Capitan to a single digit with the victory.

Despite the loss the Sultans (13-9-1, 10-1) lead the Vaqueros by 1 1/2 games with four contests remaining.

El Capitan looks to clinch the GVL title when they face the Sultans on Wednesday (May 13) in Lakeside.

In Saturday’s upset on May 9th, Santana took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. But the Matadors erased that advantage in the 2nd and 3rd innings, tying the game.

Mount Miguel snapped a 3-3 tie in the 6th inning when Keller singled and CONNER WHITE hit an RBI sacrifice fly. ANDREW MONTIJO reached on an error and DANIEL SAAVEDRA singled. CHRISTIAN GARCOA followed with a run scoring single.

Those late inning blasts keyed Mount Miguel to the victory.

El Cajon Valley Baseball Update

EL CAJON (5-8-15) — El Cajon Valley knocked off Monte Vista 2-1 in a Grossmont Valley League game on Wednesday (May 6).

Reaching deep into the archives, the victory was the Braves’ second win in league action in 138 games, which covers a 14-year spread for El Cajon Valley coach CLIFTON THOMAS, who won as a coach but not as a player at the school.

The last time the Braves won a league game was in 2008 when they knocked off West Hills 11-7 on May 4.

Overall the Patriots are 20-2, ranked No. 5 in the San Diego Section and 7-0 in league play, moving closer to capturing the Central League flag. With five games left in the regular season, a complete collapse is all that could deny the Patriots the title.

Playing for the first time in nine days, the Patriots were a little bit on the rusty side but the pinpoint pitching of NATHAN JARVIS kept Christian rolling.

Jarvis needed 85 pitches to turn in a complete game effort, scattering 6 hits and striking out 5 to earn his fourth win in as many decisions.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning as CHRISTIAN MEZA doubled to center field. JUSTIN LEDGERWOOD singled, and TREVOR HOWELL stroked a sacrifice fly.

Christian doubled its advantage in the 4th as WILL HAIL and CHASE WEHSENER drew back-to-back walks. That set the stage for an RBI double by NATE CAZARES off the fence.

In the 5th inning with two outs, Hail doubled and scored on a base hit by Wehsener for a 3-0 lead.

The final marker came in the 7th frame on an RBI single by Hail.

Helix and Granite Hills now in a tie atop Hills

By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
LA MESA (5-7-15) — Helix moved into a tie with Granite Hills by knocking off the Eagles 4-2 Wednesday (May 6) on the Highlanders’ diamond in a Grossmont Hills League game.

The Highlanders upended Granite Hills – twice – to gain a berth as a front runner. The two teams will meet again down the stretch in the final game of the season.

Granite Hills had to survive on back-to-back solo home runs in the first inning by MICHAEL DIFFLEY and JORDON VERDON.

The Highlanders fought back to tie it in the fourth inning on a solo home run by LEE MUTTER.

In the fifth with two outs, Helix’s STEVEN ALBA doubled and advanced on a passed ball. MATTHEW RICHARDSON singled and CONNER KONISHI reached on an error. JACK STRONACH then hit an RBI single to score Alba with the winning run.

Konishi pitched a complete game for the Highlanders, allowing only two runs in seven innings. He struck out three.

“Even though we’ve been successful our kids are hungry,” said Helix coach COLE HOLLAND. “We’re out to prove how good we really are, rankings aside.”

VALHALLA 6, GROSSMONT 2 — Visiting Valhalla is scrambling to earn a post-season playoff berth against the Grossmont Foothillers, who defeated in Wednesday’s (May 6) Grossmont Hills League action.

Valhalla made it look easy at the start with a 5-0 lead and added a sixth run in the sixth frame to support the pitching of BROCK MOSIER, who pitched 6 2/3 innings while allowing four hits and struck out seven.

CASEY O’SULLIVAN got the final out for his first save.

DOMENIC DONATO was 1-for-3 with two RBI for Valhalla, COLE HENDERSON was 1-for-4 with an RBI, and Mosier was 1-for-3 with a run.

For Grossmont JAYDEN LOMBARDO was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

SANTANA 1, WEST HILLS 0 — Santana maintained its two game lead over El Capitan in Wednesday’s (May 6) Grossmont Valley League action as the Sultans nipped West Hills.

TRISTEN SALINAS pitched a complete game 3-hitter with 8 strikeouts and walked none for the Sultans.

“I knew what was at stake today,” said Salinas, who improved his record to 3-2. “I won’t admit that I wasn’t worried, but I knew once we took the lead that I had things in control. I had good ball movement on my changeup and fastball.”

DAULTON BARRY, who was used as a pinch hitter on a rare occasion, slashed an RBI single in the sixth inning for Santana, scoring JACOB ODENKIRK who had gotten on base on a single. REECE HERNANDEZ then sacrificed him to second, and Barry delivered his clutch hit.

“Coach told me that I might get a chance and I should be ready,” said Barry. “So when he made the call, I was ready.”

Barry rifled an 0-2 pitched which proved to be the game-winning blow.

“It was a crazy at-bat,” Barry said. “At first when I got the hit it was hard to process. I wasn’t really sure what had happened.”

EL CAJON VALLEY 2, MONTE VISTA 1 — El Cajon Valley won its first league game in 14 years as the Braves overcame Monte Vista on Wednesday (May 6) in a Grossmont Valley League game.

“The guys finally played baseball today,” said an elated Braves coach, CLIFTON THOMAS. “We committed no errors and played flawless baseball today. It was my first league win – it took me 14 years to get it – as a player or a coach.”

In the fourth inning CARLOS MEJIA walked and stole second base. HECTOR CARREON hit an infield single up the middle, moving Majia to third. BRANDON RUMLEY hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Mejia for the Braves’ first run.

“It was a good momentum swing for us,” Thomas recalled.

DONOVAN FOSTER, on a full count hit a single then stole second base. ANTHONY MORENO walked and GABE CASTILLO hit a perfectly placed bunt to move the runners. ANDREW BISHOP then hit a high chopper to score Foster with the game winner.

“We coaches preach to the kids ‘You don’t have to be the hero, you can be the hero in many different ways,’” said Thomas.

For Monte Vista SHAUN CAIN led off the third inning with a walk and FRANK GUTIERREZ laid down a sacrifice, moving Cain to second. KRYSTIAN CAMACHO hit an infield single and a passed ball moved Camacho to second. TYLER WILLIAMS hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Cain.

EL CAPITAN 8, MOUNT MIGUEL 2 — The visiting Vaqueros maintained their 2-game deficit in the Grossmont Valley League behind Santana, despite rolling over Mount Miguel on Wednesday (May 6) in Spring Valley.

DYLAN WANNAMAKER posted his 3rd win of the season with a complete game effort in the Vaqueros’ conquest of the Matadors. Wannamaker improved his record to 3-0.

The Vaqueros took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by JASON MOORMAN and added two more runs in the third as MYLES EMMERSON hit his second home run of the season with one on.

El Capitan would add four more runs to claim the victory.

Moorman pitched a complete game, allowing only five hits and two earned runs as he posted his third in without a loss.

For Mount Miguel ERIC DE LA ROSA hit his third home run in the fourth inning with a man aboard.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 5, ROCK ACADEMY 1 — Foothills Christian wrapped up its first baseball championship in school history by clipping off the Rock Academy in Wednesday’s (May 6) Ocean League contest.

The Knights (19-4, 5-0) took the lead with a 3-run third inning and never looked back.

Key hits in that rally included RBI singles by RYAN QUINN, DANIEL LUCKETT and TIM GRAY.

The Knights sealed the win in the fifth inning with two more runs. EZRA SIMS supplied the key blow with a 2-run single.

STEELE CANYON 16, SERRA 6 — This game belonged to SERGIO ALCAREZ, who went 4-for-4 with a home run – his third in the sixth inning – a double and eight RBI as Steele Canyon snapped a 4-game losing streak by upending Serra on Wednesday (May 6) in a non-league contest.

“Alcarez had a monster day,” said Cougars assistant coach MARK BRUDER.

The Cougars pounded out 17 hits in the lop-sided victory over the Conquistadors.

TREVOR ROW also slammed a solo home run for Steele Canyon in the third inning.

This was not a one-man show as MATTHEW BAGDASAR went 5-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, and JOSH ESQUIBEL went 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI as the Cougars rolled over the Conquistadors.

“We had a 7-0 lead after three innings and could not get (GEOVANNY) QUIROS the win,” Bruder noted.

MICHAEL FITCH (1-1) entered the game in relief and logged the win for Steele Canyon.

Keirsey brings speed to the diamond

By Bill Dickens

EL CAJON (5-5-15) — No matter what sport is involved Helix’s DaSHAWN KEIRSEY winds up at the head of the class.

It was no exception as the senior left-hander made it look easy as he threw a 3-hit shutout against front-running Granite Hills to pull the Highlanders within one win of the Grossmont Hills League lead in Monday’s (May 4) encounter which saw Helix take a 3-0 win over the Eagles.

“This is definitely one of the best games I’ve ever pitched,” said Keirsey, who completed his 3-hit shutout with 8 strikeouts. “My fastball was on top of it and my changeup was right there with it. I had them guessing, and that worked in my favor.”

In the second inning Helix grabbed the lead when Keirsey walked, stole second, then stole third and scored on a base hit by KEATON CHASE.

In the fourth inning LEE MUTTER doubled and scored on a base hit by Keirsey.

In the final frame JACK STRONACH drove in the third run with a base hit.

Granite Hills couldn’t seem to get their offense going.

VALHALLA 5, GROSSMONT 4 – The host Valhalla Norsemen stole a key bottom of the 7th victory over Grossmont in Monday’s (May 4) Grossmont Hills League encounter on a double by LEWIS DIRKES at Eric Turgeon Field.

Dirkes led Valhalla by going 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and scored four runs.

In the second inning ADAM LOPEZ slugged a solo home run to left field. BRAEDEN BARR went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI for the Foothillers.

The game was tied 3-3 at the end of the second inning, and Grossmont edged ahead by a run in the 3rd as CALVIN FARRIS singled and Barr doubled to right, scoring Farris.

In the fifth Valhalla tied it up again as Dirkes singled and stole second base. ANDY VAN ANTWERP sacrificed him to third and JEFF HOUGHTBY singled to score Dirkes.

In the final frame Valhalla took the lead for keeps as Dirkes reached on an error, Van Antwerp was hit by a pitch. One out later RYAN WITHERSPOON singled to center, scoring Dirkes.

GARRETT YOCOM earned the victory for Valhalla with three innings pitched, gave up two hits, no runs and struck out four.

SANTANA 5, WEST HILLS 4 – Santana maintained its 2-game lead in the Grossmont Valley circuit by holding off the Wolf Pack with six games remaining on the Sultans’ regular season slate.

Barring a total collapse it would be fair to say that Santana has the league championship in its grip. El Capitan trails by two.

DAULTON BARRY pitched a complete game for Santana, surviving 13 hits while striking out seven and evening his season record at 4-4. Against league competition Barry is 4-0.

Santana put the game away in the 6th inning on an error, a sacrifice bunt and a groundout, which gave the Sultans a 4-2 lead over the Wolf Pack.

JACOB ODENKIRK was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI for Santana.

JERRY ALESI was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a sacrifice fly. “The Wolf Pack lost a tight one to Santana,” noted West Hills coach MIKE (Cougar) HARWELL. “The Pack came back in the seventh to make it a close game.”

Trailing 5-2 West Hills got hot and scored two runs to make it a one run game before finally ending the game with the tying run on second base.

Wolf Pack pitchers pitched a solid game with senior right-hander DONOVAN McCRYSTAL tossing 3.2 innings, giving up four runs, two of which were earned while striking at three.

KRIS AGUILAR finished up the game going 2.1, allowing one unearned run while only surrendering single base hit.

Senior COLE PENDLETON led the Pack offense going 3-for-4 with a double, 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Senior Kris Aguilar also had a solid game with the bat, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Junior left fielder SPENCER MOYER chipped in with a 2-for-3 performance and a double as well.

"We played a solid ballgame and gave our best effort. I expect another competitive ballgame the next time we play," said Harwell.

EL CAPITAN 6, MOUNT MIGUEL 5 – MARSHALL CHAMPLIN slugged a 3-run homer in the sixth inning but the game was still up for grabs going into the final frame of Monday’s (May 4) Grossmont Valley League encounter.

The bottom line came in the seventh inning when the Vaqueros scored on a single down the left field line by DALTON JENNINGS.

That blow set up a solid relief effort by JORDAN FRANTZ who blanked the Matadors on one hit over the final two frames.

MYLES EMMERSON was 2-for-3 as was Jennings in the winning cause.

The Vaqueros snapped a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh as CLAY CROMWELL walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and Frantz ran for him. With two outs SAM MELERO was intentionally walked. Jennings then stroked a line drive down the left field line for the game-winning blow.

For Mount Miguel JAKE CASTILLO was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

ERIC DE LA ROSA went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.

In the fifth inning the Matadors loaded the bases on singles by Castillo, ALEX ESTRADA and ENRIQUE KELLER. De La Rosa slashed a 2-run double and CONNER WHITE whacked a 2-run single, which gave Mount Miguel a 5-1 lead.

MONTE VISTA 19, EL CAJON VALLEY 3 – Monte Vista scored 10 runs in the first three frames and seven in the fifth en route to a Grossmont Valley League onslaught of El Cajon Valley.

Monte Vista put together two big innings after taking a 10-0 lead after three frames, then crossed the plate seven times in the 5th, turning the game into a rout.

“JOHNNY JONES hit the ball really well today,” said Monarchs coach MATT ATKINSON. “He was 3-for-5 with two triples and three RBI.”

Not to be overlooked was Monarchs leadoff hitter TYLER WILLIAMS, who was 4-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBI.

AUSTIN CAOLE was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI for Monte Vista.

For the Braves in a losing cause CARLOS MEJIA was 3-for-3.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 23, THE ROCK ACADEMY 7 – The Foothills Christian Knights turned The Rock into pebbles with 19 hits and 23 runs in Monday’s (May 4) Ocean League contest at Barona.

RYAN QUINN was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four stolen bases in the Knights’ rout of the Warriors.

EZRA SIMS carried a big bat for Foothills Christian by going 3-for-6 with four runs scored and five RBI, while JOSH LEWIS was 3-for-4 with six runs and three RBI.

Overall Foothills Christian stole 17 bases.

“KONNER VON DER LIETH had a no hitter going until the fifth inning when I took him out,” said Knights coach DAVE LEWIS. “He had already thrown 70 pitches. I don’t think he’s given up a run yet since he’s been eligible (Apr. 6).”

Four Foothills Christian pitchers combined to spin a 2-hitter despite the misleading score.

SAN DIEGO 11, STEELE CANYON 0 – San Diego scorched Steele Canyon Monday (May 4) in a non-league encounter in Rancho San Diego.

It seems the Cougars have had to delve into their JV pitching staff due to lack of depth and injuries. Of course there’s no excuse for producing only two hits – singles by LUKE ARIAS and JONATHAN KRATZ.

TYLER LUBAN, in his first varsity start for the Cougars, gave up four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.

EL CAJON (5-2-15) — In a game that stretched 11 innings to resolve, Granite Hills overcame Steele Canyon 4-3 in Grossmont Hills League play on Friday (May 1).

Granite Hills struck first with two runs in the opening frame. With one out, DILLAN SHRUM was hit by a pitch and DANIEL VASQUEZ reached on an error. ANDY LOWRY hit a line drive double to center field to score Shrum, and Vasquez came in on the last play.

In the bottom of the second SEAN ROSS hit a line drive double to center field and DARIEN COSSIO singled to left, scoring Ross to make it 3-0 for the Eagles.

That score would hold up until the top of the seventh when the Cougars’ JOSH ESQUIBEL reached on an error, SERGIO ALCAREZ singled to center, advancing Esquibel to third. AVERY TUCK then hammered a 3-run home run to right field to tie the game at 3-all.

The tie game stretched into extra innings and was decided in the bottom of the 11th when, with one out, the Eagles’ Shrum was hit by a pitch and Vasquez walked. Lowry then doubled to left field, scoring Shrum with the game-winning RBI.

Lowry was 3 for 5 with three RBI.

For Steele Canyon Tuck was 1 for 2 with a run and three RBI.

GROSSMONT 3, HELIX 2 — In what could be described as big brother taking on little brother, big brother showed how to get things done.

The Foothillers (14-11, 3-3 GHL) struck first with back to back doubles by CALVIN FARRIS (2-3, run scored) and TIGER GUERRERO (1-3, run scored, RBI) in the first inning.

Helix (13-7, 4-2 GHL) answered right back in the bottom of the first with a single run scored by CONNER KONISHI (3-4, run scored).

The Highlanders came back and tied it up in the bottom of the third. MATTHEW RICHARDSON (1-3, run scored) led the inning off with a single to right center. He was pushed over to second on one of Konishi’s hits to put runners on first and second with no one out. On a fly out, Richardson moved up to third. LEE MUTTER was hit by a pitch to load the bases up. HUNTER ISBELL (1-3) walked to force in Richardson.

ADAM LOPEZ (1-3, run scored, RBI) hit a leadoff home run to left center in the fourth inning to give the Foothillers a 3-2 lead that would hold up.

EL CAPITAN 21, MONTE VISTA 0 — In a surprisingly lop-sided Grossmont Valley League encounter, second place El Capitan steam-rollered Monte Vista in a complete blowout Friday (May 1) in Lakeside.

The Vaqueros barged in front 15-0 after three innings buoyed by a nine run third inning. Twelve Vaqueros contributed to a 22-hit attack against the Monarchs.

The kingpin in El Capitan’s blowout was designated hitter CLAY CROMWELL, who was 5 for 5 with four RBI, a double and two runs scored.

The hit parade continued as MYLES EMMERSON was 2 for 3 with three runs scored, three RBI and a double.

Not to be overlooked was DAWSON McCLANAHAN who was 3 for 5 with two RBI, a triple and three runs scored.

JASON MOORMAN was 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.

CHANCE COLSON pitched four innings, gave up four hits and struck out three as he improved his record to 5-3. JORDAN FRANTZ finished up the final three innings, giving up one hit.

SANTANA 23, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 — BRANDON MOSBURG pitched six innings of 1-hit ball and was 2 for 5 at the plate in Santana’s rout of El Cajon Valley Friday (May 1) in a Grossmont Valley League game.

MITCHELL MILLER was 3 for 6 with two RBI and two runs scored for the first place Sultans (11-8-1, 8-0).

MASON CHAMBERS was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored for the Sultans, who hammered out 14 hits in the lop-sided victory.

REECE HERNANDEZ swatted a double and was 2 for 5 in the Sultans’ onslaught.

Not to be overlooked was CHRISTIAN MENDEZ, who hammered a solo home run in the fifth inning.

Luckett and the Knights dismiss Army-Navy

By Bill Dickens
© East County Sports.com
CARLSBAD (5-1-15) — Foothills Christian traveled to North County Thursday (Apr. 30) for an Ocean League encounter with Army-Navy and brought home a 4-1 victory.

The Knights (17-4, 3-0) struck first as JOSH LEWIS and MARK PROFETA both walked to start off the second inning. LIAM CAREY hit a bunt single to load the bases and KONNER VON DER LIECH was hit by a pitch to score Lewis.

In the third inning DANIEL LUCKETT and EZRA SIMS both singled and Josh Lewis was hit by a pitch to again load the bases. One out later TREVOR SMALLWOOD hit a groundout to third that scored Luckett.

After two outs in the fourth RYAN QUINN hit an infield single and Luckett followed with a 2-run home run – his 4th - to right center over a 15 foot fence.

BAILEY LEWIS pitched 3 2/3 innings until he was injured in a play at first base and had to leave the game. He was going to be checked out at the hospital for a possible broken ankle.

Quinn came in for two innings and Von Der Liech finished with an inning and a third to complete the game.

“Our pitching was outstanding,” said Knights coach DAVE LEWIS. “Bailey Lewis was dominating until he got hurt. Hitting wise, Daniel Luckett just carried us.”
