Highlanders Share Title, Can't End Matador Reign

LA MESA (2-21-15) — When the Helix Highlanders knocked off Mount Miguel back on January 30th, it was the first loss in league for Mount Miguel since February 7th..... of 2006.

Helix entered Friday night (Feb 20) in position to end a decade and a half long streak of league championships by the Matadors. Helix already clinched a share of the Grossmont Hills League, likely sealed the number one seed in the Division Two playoffs and has much going for them headed into the post season. A perfect run and the ability to boast themselves as the team that ended the Matadors reign would have been icing on the cake.

That didn’t happen, as Mount Miguel finished off the Highlanders 62-40 after a furious battle up and down the floor. Mount Miguel has lost only two league games in 14 years.

Coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL'S squad came to crash the Highlanders party, and perhaps send the Scotties off to post-season play with more questions than answers. On Friday night Mount Miguel looked like one of the best teams in the county, a team that has played a dreaded schedule and is seeing dividends pay off at the right time. Helix probably wasn't focused on a place in history, but looked often out of sync and overwhelmed by the Mount Miguel offense that was running up and down their floor at will.

When asked if the idea of ending the Matadors League Championship streak was used as motivation for the night, Coach Sandoval had other reasons for the peak performance "No, we've just been playing really well lately and I think our tough schedule paid off. It's all really coming together."

Mount Miguel Junior ROZLYN PIERCE didn't hit a field goal until 30 seconds into the second quarter, and she landed just one free throw prior to that. In fact those were the only points Pierce netted on the night. If you ignored all other statistics you might deem it an average night for a high school player. Pierce was anything but average on this night however, grabbing 12 rebounds and altering anywhere between 18 and 20 shots that came her way. Add four blocks and several hustle plays that led to second, third or even fourth chances on offense and you start to get the picture of Pierce's performance.

KAMREE HARRISON nailed 5 triples for the Matadors as part of her game high 28 points. ZARIA BRANCH added 19 points and SATERA BATES chipped in with 10.

After squashing the Highlanders 13-4 in the first two quarters, Mount Miguel simply ran roughshod over Helix until the fourth quarter when Helix trailed by 27.

BRIAJUNAE SHEPPARD landed seven of her team high 11 points for Helix in the fourth, but the damage was done and even a 22 point quarter for the Highlanders wasn't enough to end the Matadors streak. DANIELLE SIMMONS was big on the boards with 10 rebounds to go with her eight points.

Mount Miguel and Helix will head in different directions as CIF play begins next week. The Matadors are a likely four or five seed in Division I, the Highlanders the likely one seed in Division II. Though the players will move on, this night may be viewed down the road as the night the Matadors reign could have been put to rest, but wasn't. Mount Miguel and Helix now share the Grossmont Hills League title, in all aspects, it is something both teams have reason to take pride in.

Helix: Briajunae Shepard 11 (4 reb, 2 ast), Danielle Simmons 8 (10 reb), Irma Ealy 7 (8 reb, 1 blk), Destini Anderson 5 (6 reb, 2 blk), Shirah Hancock 5 (1 reb, 1 stl), Camryn Owens 4 (1 ast), Raeshondra Dike' (6 reb, 1 stl), Taliah Hooker (1 reb).

SANTANA 49, VALHALLA 28 — It was a special night out at Santana High as the Sultans took on the Valhalla Norseman in Grossmont Valley League play on Friday (Feb. 20). It was special as it was Senior Night and also to finish no lower than second place in league via the 49-28 victory over the Norsemen.

After the senior recognition ceremonies commenced the game started out pretty evenly for both teams as Santana was able to cling to a 12-10 lead after the first period. Valhalla darted out to the lead in the second as Santana could only muster one point until the final 1:20 of the half when they were able to finally get the offense going.

They were able to finish out the half with a bang as MORGAN TURNER was able to take the inbounds and slash her way through the defense and take it up court and buried a midcourt shot at the buzzer to tie the game at 17-17 at the break.

It was a surprise that the score was tied at the break as Valhalla controlled the boards in the first half as they out boarded the Sultans nearly 2:1.

In the third period Santana was able to finally muster offense as they went on a 9-0 run to take the nine point lead and were able to finish out the third period on top 31-23. Santana took the momentum they had built in the third and carried it over to the final period by completely dominating and were able to build their largest lead of 24 points. Valhalla played valiantly but just ran out of steam in the second half.

Leading the way for the Sultans was the dynamic duo of Turner who turned in 17 points including four treys, five rebounds, two assists, four steals, and TAYLOR ESTES who on Senior Night garnered 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals and five blocks.

Madison, mind you, also drew blanks in the second quarter, but the Warhawks had a 21 point jump at that time.

BROOKE OWENS led Christian with 12 points, six rebounds and five steals in the 36-24 losing effort.

EL CAPITAN 56, SANTANA 47 — In a game that many experts picked to be one of the best games of the night the clash between the second place Santana Sultans and the first place El Capitan Vaqueros didn’t disappoint those who were in attendance for the Tuesday (Feb. 10) night Grossmont Valley League tilt.

The Sultans were looking to avenge their only league loss of 40-30 to the Vaqueros from January, but unfortunately couldn’t reverse the results as the Vaqueros swept the Sultans with a 56-47 victory out in Santee.

The Sultans were plagued by the deja-vu bug as in the previous game when El Capitan jumped out of the box 11-0 to start the game. This time it was the Vaqueros jumping out 7-0 again to start the game. Despite the slow start by the Sultans they were actually able to get back into the game by knocking down shots, however CIERRA CUTLER for the Vaqueros knocked down a jumper at the buzzer in the first quarter to take the 15-10 lead.

The second period started out in favor of the Sultans as they used a 6-0 streak to take their first lead of the game at 16-15 on two consecutive three pointers by TAYLOR ESTES. The rest of the period was pretty much even between the two teams as the Vaqueros were able to hold to a slim 27-26 lead at the break.

The second half started out like the first with El Capitan going on a 7-0 run which was culminated by a KASSIDY KYGAR jumper to put the Vaqueros up 34-26. The Sultans were able to stay in the game as they were able to hold Cutler to two points in the second half after she had done damage with 19 in the first half, but unfortunately for them they couldn’t contain either VALERIE RENFROW or Kygar who both picked up the scoring slack.

The third period was pretty much the decider as El Capitan was able to outscore the Sultans 16-9 and gain a little breathing room via a 43-35 advantage.

The dynamic duo of Estes and MORGAN TURNER tried to will the Sultans to the victory as both scored in double digits. Estes was able to punch in 15 points while Morgan drilled 13 of her own.

It was El Capitan who was able to build its largest lead of the game at 54-40 with 2:16 remaining and outscore the Sultans 13-12 in the final stanza. Cutler did her usual damage for the Vaqueros, slashing her way to 21 points and 6 rebounds, while Renfrow rolled a double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and swatted 5 shots, finally it was Kygar who put 10 points and 8 rebounds on the board to round out the dynamic trios’ stat line for the evening.

The victory over the Sultans gives the Vaqueros a two-game lead with three games to play and unless something wacky occurs, the Vaqueros will claim their first league title in over a decade.

El Capitan: Cierra Cutler 21 (6 reb, 2 ast, 5 stl), Valerie Renfrow 17 (10 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl, 5 blk), Kassidy Kygar 10 (8 reb, 3 ast, 2 stl), Grace Burkett 4 (6 reb, 1 stl, 1 blk), Marie Cook 2 (3 reb, 5 ast), Mackenzie Mead 2 (4 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl).

Santana: Taylor Estes 15 (4 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl, 3 blk), Morgan Turner 13 (3 reb, 3 ast, 6 stl), Kelsey Wesen 6 (3 reb, 2 ast), Kobie Holland 6 (5 reb, 1 stl, 1 blk), Sierra Simanek 4 (6 reb, 2 stl), Tika Taylor 3.

The Matadors, who are 13-10 overall, ran into a national steam roller in Bishop’s Alemany in Saturday’s (Feb. 7) annual Coaches vs. Cancer event, hosted by Bishop’s La Jolla.

EL CAJON (2-3-15) — In Grossmont Valley League action on Monday (Feb. 2) the El Capitan Vaqueros took on the El Cajon Valley Braves and were able to come away with the 41-29 victory. The victory keeps the Vaqueros on the right side of the win column and also helps keep their first place lead over the Santana Sultans.

It was all El Capitan in the first quarter as they jumped out to the 19-4 lead and were able to extend the lead at the break 29-10. The Vaqueros came out of the break and built their lead to 35-17 at the end of three periods.

El Cajon Valley in the final period tried to make a comeback effort but unfortunately they had dug themselves too deep but the bright spot for them and something to keep in mind for the next time was the fact that they outscored the Vaqueros in the second half 19-12.

One of the biggest assets for the Vaqueros was the fact that they were able to use their size to out muscle the Braves as they accrued a 45-24 advantage on the boards. Another factor in the victory was the fact that El Cajon Valley wasn’t able to do anything from behind the arc, only shooting 1-18.

Leading the way for the Vaqueros was the always reliable CIERRA CUTLER who finished with 17 points. Rebounding wise it was VALERIE RENFROW who shined with 14 rebounds as well as GRACE BURKETT with 11.

The Braves were led by NASHEA LAMPKIN who poured in 11 points, six rebounds and six steals. SUMAYA HAMEED also shined for the Braves as she was able to grab seven rebounds.

El Capitan: Cierra Cutler 17 (2 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Kassidy Kygar 7 (6 reb, 1 ast, 7 stl), Valerie Renfrow 7 (14 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl, 1 blk), Marie Cook 4 (4 reb, 2 ast,), Grace Burkett 4 (11 reb), Mackenzie Mead 2 (5 reb), Carol Martin (3 reb, 1 ast)

El Cajon Valley: Nashea Lampkin 11 (6 reb, 1 ast, 6 stl), Ninwey Esho 6 (4 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Leanna Watson 6 (2 reb, 3 ast, 5 stl), Tatisha Clemons 5 (1 stl), Sumaya Hameed 1 (7 reb), Mary Grace Ronquillo (5 reb, 1 ast).
