Stoked Griffins get early lift to beat Mesa at tourney

PALM DESERT (11-7-15) — After shooting a paltry 26 percent in the first half, the Grossmont College Griffins heated up to nail 58 percent in the second half to defeat San Diego Mesa 72-58 in Friday’s (Nov. 6) second round of the Frank Garcia Tournament at College of the Desert.

“When you play these early games (started at 1 p.m.) it usually takes a little while to get your rhythm,” said Griffins assistant coach JOHN CLARK. “But we made some adjustments in the second half to turn the game around.”

For the second game in a row KAELEN MITCHELL led the Griffins in scoring with 15 points.

SPENCER VERING chipped in with 11 points and 6 rebounds.

LeANDRE POWELL bounced off the bench to contribute 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Grossmont played without point guard MARCOS MEZA, who had to leave the team due to family problems.

Filling Meza’s shoes was LARRY STOKES, who drilled in 8 points, dished 4 assists and plucked 2 rebounds.

“Stokes did a fine job of running the show for us in Marcos’ absence,” Clark noted.

Grossmont will play the winner of the Long Beach City-Imperial Valley game for the consolation championship at 11 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 7).
