SAN YSIDRO (12-19-15) — The undefeated Grossmont Foothillers will seek their 7th straight win on Saturday (Dec. 19) when they take on Morse for the Mustang Tournament championship at 7 p.m. at San Dieguito High.

Grossmont defeated host San Ysidro 53-32 in the Mustang Tournament semifinals on Friday (Dec. 18).

The Foothillers, who were led by freshman ATHENA SOTELO’s 19 points and 7 rebounds, coupled with junior TAISHA SILAS’ 18 points and 11 rebounds, caged the Cougars with a 20-5 second quarter spread.

Sotelo nailed 8 of 13 from the field including 3-for-4 free throw shooting and 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Grossmont:  Athena Sotelo 19 (7 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl), Taisha Silas 18 (11 reb, 2 stl), Candace Henderson 7 (3 reb), Symone Griffith 4 (3 reb, 3 ast), Lina McDuffie 2 (1 reb), Grace Cerrado 2, Jazmine Lee 1 (5 reb).

MOUNT MIGUEL 66, MIRA MESA 50 – Transfer DESTINI ANDERSON turned in her finest offensive performance of the season as the Matadors mauled the Marauders in Friday’s (Dec. 18) Winter Prep Classic – East Division at Bishop’s.

Anderson, who did the bulk of her damage on 13 of 17 free throw shooting, also led the team with 11 rebounds.

“Anderson is doing well at picking her game up,” said Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL.

AMBER HARD knocked down 18 points, captured 7 rebounds and made 2 steals for the Matadors, who overcame a 32-28 halftime deficit.

“We’re still beating ourselves right now,” Sandoval said. “Our defensive communication needs a whole lot of work. We need to take more pride in playing defense.”

Mount Miguel:  Destini Anderson 25 (11 reb, 3 stl), Amber Hard 18 (7 reb, 2 stl), Satera Bates 7 (2 reb, 1 ast), Laila Smith 4 (2 reb, 7 ast, 3 stl, 1 blk), Zaria Arline 3 (1 reb, 1 stl), A’Zhanea Pegram 2 (2 reb, 1 stl), Michelle Corley 2 (1 stl), Camara Douglas 1 (5 reb, 1 stl), Kiara Morris (2 reb).

SERRA 39, WEST HILLS 29 – The West Hills Wolf Pack had a difficult time getting out of the gate against Serra in Friday’s (Dec. 18) Winter Prep Classic – East Division contest.

Fact is the Pack scored only 8 points in the opening half to trail the (6-2) Conquistadors 17-8.

There was no recovery in sight for the Wolf Pack, which suffered its second loss in eight starts.

None of the Pack performers scored double digits as West Hills finished with a season scoring low. However, this is a team built on defense more than offense.

West Hills:  Maya Clemons 7 (7 reb, 2 stl), Megan Scott 7 (7 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl), Jessica Fondas 5 (3 reb, 2 stl), Carly Raley 5 (8 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Clarrisa Holder 3 (4 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Kerrie Daniels 2 (6 reb, 1 blk), Alyssa Garcia (1 reb).

Fact is the Highlanders were down only 28-20 at the break.

The wheels came off in the third quarter for Helix as the Cavers claimed a 17-1 scoring advantage.

Things didn’t get much better in the fourth quarter when the Caves claimed a 17-5 scoring bulge.
