SAN DIEGO (12-31-16) — Grossmont College proved that it can play with the best in Wednesday’s (Dec. 31) championship round in the San Diego Mesa College Holiday Inn Mission Valley Tournament against East Los Angeles College.
The perennial power Huskies overcame a 27-23 halftime deficit to deal the Griffins a 65-59 defeat.
Grossmont, which fell to 9-5 overall, reached a tournament championship game for the third time in four tries. The Griffins won the 44th Annual Grossmont College Invitational and finished second in the San Diego City and San Diego Mesa College tournaments.
Although the Griffins produced a balanced attack against East L.A. with six players scoring 6 points or more, they struggled on the offensive end.
“You know, we feel like we don’t get the credit we deserve,” said Griffins assistant coach JOHN CLARK. “We played a really tough schedule and won our conference two years ago, so we’ve got our kids going into games with a little chip on their shoulders. Seems like we have to prove ourselves every time out.”
CORWIN FEERICK led the Griffins with 12 points including a trio of 3-pointers.
KAELEN MITCHELL added 11 points and a pair of treys, and MARCOS MEZA and DANIEL McCOWN pitched in 10 points apiece. The majority of McCown’s points came on 2 long rangers.
The Griffins open the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference season on Wednesday (Jan. 6) by hosting Southwestern College at 7 p.m.
