Eagles, Sultans win big league showdowns in Thursday

Thursday, Feb. 11

Granite Hills 1 , Valhalla 0  – At Granite Hills High School, the Eagles improved to 4-1-1 following their tie earlier this week with the Foothillers, who currently stand in first place in the Hills League. The Eagles are 17-4-4 overall. Goal – Equihua.

 

Santana 1, Steele Canyon 0 – At Santana High School, League player of the year candidate Alonzo Dukes scored for the Sultans, while Jacob Odenkirk got the shutout in goal.

Justin Stamm was the Sultans’ man of the match, anchoring in the midfield as he has all season, helping the Sultans into a tie for first place with two games left.

The game was the biggest match of the season to date in the Valley League, as the Sultans improved to 6-2-1 in league, while the Cougars are now 5-1-3.

 

Wednesday, Feb. 10

Christian 2, Mission Bay 2 – The Patriots led 2-0 at halftime, but the Bucs came back in the second half, spoiling Christian’s chance at a second league win against the league-winless Mission Bay squad.

 

Tuesday, Feb. 9

Grossmont 2, Monte Vista 0 – Kazu Thurston and Dennis Bragg scored for the Hillers, while junior Dominic Rowe garnered an assist.

Dean Schwartz got the shutout in goal.

In the biggest game to date in the Hills League season, the Hillers and Eagles will battle on Feb. 16 at Grossmont.

Santana 7, Mount Miguel 0 – The Sultans triumphed over the visiting Matadors in a league game. The Sultans led 2-0 at halftime.

West Hills 5, Valhalla 0 – At Valhalla, Ryan Jewell and Paul Anderson both scored two goals for the Wolf Pack, while Jivan Mansour and Dylan Pawlowski both had two assists.

Steele Canyon 0, El Cajon Valley 0 – At the Braves’ field, the hosts made an impressive defensive effort stand up in a scoreless draw against the top contender.

Helix, 9, El Capitan 0 – Helix scored seven goals in the first half on the road.

Grossmont 2, West Hills 0 – Marvin Elyia scored for a 1-0 lead, then late in the contest, Dennis Bragg scored on an assist set up perfectly on a pass through the mouth of the goal from junior Dominic Rowe.

Dean Schwartz had a big game in goal for Grossmont, turning away 16 shots.

Grossmont is in first place in the Hills League with a 4-1 record and 7-8-3 overall.

Granite Hills 2, Monte Vista 0 – Granite Hills led 1-0 at halftime en route to the Hills League win.

Pierre Conte and Richard Flores scored for the Eagles. Granite Hills is 3-1-1 in league and 16-4-4 overall.

 

Grossmont Valley League

Santana 3, El Cajon Valley 1 – Alonzo Dukes scored all three goals and Santana led 2-0 at halftime and won the Valley game on the road to improve to 11-2-4 overall.

Carlos Negrete and and Luke Clark-Hyden, a junior, had an assist each. The Sultans are 4-2 in league and in second place.

Steele Canyon 1, Helix 0 – The Cougars edged Helix to improve to 5-0-1 atop the Valley table.

Mount Miguel 1, El Capitan 1 – Mount Miguel’s Alberto Gamez scored in the first half, but the Vaqueros got the equalizer in the second half. It was the third tie of the league season for both teams.

West Hills 7, El Capitan 0 – Senior Paul Anderson scored three goals and added an assist for the game, as  West Hills scored five goals in the first half on the road.

Junior Yousif Ajmayah, Ryan Jewell and seniors Jivan Mansour and Dylan Pawlowski also scored a goal for EC. Pawlowski added two assists.

Senior Jack Filiponi and junior John Norton shared the goalie duties, each recording a shutout in their respective half in the net.

 

Thursday, Jan. 28

Valhalla 2, Monte Vista 1 – The Norsemen led 1-0 at halftime and continued on for the their first Hills League win of the season. Valhalla improved to 3-7-5 overall.

Santana 2, El Capitan 0 – Alonzo Dukes scored both goals for the Sultans, while goalkeeper Jacob Odenkirk had four saves in the shutout. Dukes now has nine goals on the season to lead all East County reported teams.

Santana improved to 3-1-1 in league and 10-1-4 overall, good for second in the Valley League.

Grossmont 3, Granite Hills 2 – Tyler Foster, Pablo Soro and Birhane Diarra scored for visiting Grossmont, while Richard Flores and Pier Palo Conte had the Eagles’ goals.

The score was tied 1-1 at halftime. Senior Marvin Eliya had an assist for Grossmont. Goalie Dean Schwartz was Grossmont’s man of the match.

The win gave the Hillers a 2-1 record in the Hills League – good for second place – and 5-8-3 overall.

Helix 2, El Capitan 1 – Helix broke a 1-1 halftime tie with a goal in the second half. The Highlanders improved to 2-1-1 in the Valley League and 7-4-3 overall.

Steele Canyon 2, Mount Miguel 1 – The Cougars led 1-0 at halftime and improved to 4-0 in the Valley League 5-3-3 overall.

Foothills Christian 2, Tri-City Christian 0 – Thursday’s league game between the Foothills Christian Knights and the host Tri-City Christian Eagles (Vista, CA), saw Foothills Christian’s squad knock off Tri-City Christian by a count of 2-0.

The Knights now hold a 2-10 record. They play next when they host Rock Academy for a Ocean test on Tuesday, February 2. Foothills Christian will meet a Warriors squad coming off a 10-1 league loss to Guajome Park Academy.

 

Tuesday, Jan. 26

Granite Hills 5, Valhalla 1 – The Eagles stormed their rivals with four goals in the second half, as Richard Flores had three goals in the game, while teammates Kellen Gaeir and Josh Rodriguez also scored for Granite Hills.

Steele Canyon 2, Santana 0 – Steele Canyon scored a goal in each half to shutout Santana.

Helix 1, Mount Miguel 1 – The Matadors’ Alberto Gamez scored the equalizer in the second half from Jose Gamez, while Mount Miguel goalie Sergio Lopez finished with nine saves.

El Capitan 2, El Cajon Valley 0 – Cole Schram led the Vaqueros with a goal and an assist in the win against the Braves. Clayton Ginkel got the shutout in goal.

West Hills 1, Monte Vista – West Hills moved to 3-0 atop the Hills League and 12-4-1 overall.

Saturday, January 23

El Cajon Valley 3, Vincent Memorial 0 – In Saturday’s non-league battle, the host El Cajon Valley Braves soccer squad scored a 3-0 win over the Vincent Memorial Scots.

The Braves (4-8) will now prepare for their battle against El Capitan. The Vaqueros go into the Grossmont Valley game with a 5-5 record. In their last contest, El Capitan by Granite Hills, 5-0, in a non-league tilt.

 

Friday, Jan. 22

Granite Hills 5, El Capitan 0 – The Eagles scored four goals in the second half to register the blowout shutout in Friday’s non-league battle.

The Eagles got goals from Kenny Elias, Andy Acosta, Nick Matthews, Bryce Strickland and Richard Flores.

The Eagles (13-3) will now prepare for their game against Valhalla. The Norsemen go into the Grossmont Hills game with a 2-6 record. In their last game, Valhalla was overwhelmed by West Hills, 2-1, in a league game.

In their next game, the Vaqueros battle the El Cajon Valley Braves in a Grossmont Valley game, on Tuesday, January 26.  El Capitan will attempt to move on its 5-5 season record. The Braves go into the bout with a 4-8 record after their 3-0 non-league win over Vincent Memorial.

Grossmont 3, Monte Vista 1 – Monte Vista led 1-0 at halftime, but the Foothillers stormed back with three second-half goals.

With 28 minutes left in the first half, junior Allen Gallaz blasted a right-foot shot for a goal as he darted open past defenders when he gathered a ball in traffic.

With 25 minutes in the game, sophomore Ryan Ortiz put back a rebound after Monte Vista senior goalie Kevin Hernandez originally made a great save off a header near the top of the box, but the ball remained loose for Ortiz.

Three minutes later, junior Dennis Bragg blasted a left-footer from deep range.

Grossmont got the equalizer earlier in the second half on a goal from junior Tyler Foster, who also had an assist. Luke Adams, of Grossmont, also had an assist, while winning goalie Dean Schwartz made five saves. Grossmont improved to 1-1.

West Hills 2, Valhalla 1 – Host West Hills, which led 1-0 at halftime, scored the go-ahead goal in the final four minutes. The Wolf Pack are off to a 2-0 start in league

Grossmont Valley League

Santana 2, Mount Miguel 1 – Andre Isabel, a center midfielder, scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the second half (55th minute). Tristen Salinas also scored for the Sultans at Mount Miguel.

Senior Justin Stamm had assisted on Salinas’ goal, which came in the 21st minute. Winning goalie Jacob Odenkirk had six saves in goal for the Sultans.

Alberto Gamez, a junior, scored the Matadors’ goal from Angel Vaca, also a junior. The Matadors’ goal came in the 32nd minute.

Santana improved to 2-0 in league and 9-0-4 overall.

Steele Canyon 7, El Cajon Valley 3 – The Cougars rode a 5-1 halftime lead into their second victory in as many starts in the Valley League. Steele Canyon improved to 3-3-3 overall.

Pawlowski

West Hills 4, El Cajon Valley 0 – West Hills scored three goals in the first half on Saturday in a non league encounter, including a goal from Dylan Pawlowski.

Next, the Wolf Pack face the Valhalla Norsemen in a Grossmont Hills contest, on Thursday, January 21.  West Hills will attempt to better on its 10-4 season record. The Norsemen enter the contest with a 2-5 record after their 3-1 non-league loss to Santana (Santee, CA).

The Braves now possess a 3-7 record. They take the field next when they travel to Steele Canyon for a Grossmont Valley challenge on Thursday, January 21. El Cajon Valley will confront a Cougars team coming off a 2-1 league win over Helix.. The Cougars record now stands at 2-3.

Grossmont 1, Calexico 0 – Dennis Bragg scored for Grossmont, while Dean Schwartz got the shutout in goal, making six saves.

Santana 2, El Cajon Valley 0 – Jacob Odenkirk recorded another shutout, making 9 saves, helping the Sultans start 1-0 in league play and 8-0-4 overall.

Steele Canyon 2, Helix 1 – The Cougars now sport a 2-3-3 record. They play next when they host El Cajon Valley for a Grossmont Valley test on Thursday, January 21.

With the loss, Helix drops to 5-4-2 on the season. The Highlanders host El Capitan to encounter the Vaqueros in a Grossmont Valley test on Thursday, January 21.

Tuesday, Jan. 12

Santana 3, Valhalla 1 – Jacob Robertson, Justin Stamm and Alonzo Dukes scored for Santana, which improved to 7-0-4.

Robertson, usually a starting midfielder for Santana, came in 20 minutes into the game and made great runs on the outside, finally scoring his first career varsity goal with the Sultans to put them up 2-1 in the first half. Santana added a goal in the second half

Grossmont 2, Steele Canyon 0 – Dennis Bragg scored, along with Tyler Foster for Grossmont, while Kazu Thurston had an assist. Dean Schwartz got the shutout in goal, making 10 saves. Grossmont improved to 3-6-2.

Granite Hills 2, El Cajon Valley 1 – Kellen Gaeir and Richard Flores scored goals for Granite Hills. The Eagles improved to 12-3-3.

 

 

Friday, Jan. 8

Santana 2, Kearny 2 – The Sultans trailed 2-0 at halftime, but earned two goals in the second half for the draw.

Tristen Salinas scored in the 48th minute off a header from Ivan Lopez. His second goal to tie the game again came off a header from a free kick from Justin Stamm in the 65th minute. Both second half goals helped the Sultans remain undefeated in their first 10 matches.

EL CAJON – The Granite Hills boys soccer team defeated Mount Miguel, 2-0, behind goals in each half, one by Richie Flores and the other by Aaron Shein.

The Eagles improved to 11-3-3

Valhalla 3, Helix 0 – Valhalla scored twice after halftime to blow open a 1-0 halftime lead.

Grossmont 0, Santana 0 – The Foothillers and Sultans played to a nil-nil draw in Santee. Senior Jacob Odenkirk got the shutout in goal for Santana. Senior Alonzo Dukes led the Sultants with three shots on goal.

The Sultans named sophomore Ben Sampson as their man of the match.

Tuesday, Jan. 5

Grossmont 4, Helix 0 – Dennis Bragg and Dominic Rowe scored for host Grossmont, while the other goals were scored by Kazu Thurston and Ian Cano, as the Hillers picked up their second win of the season.

 

Thursday, Dec. 31

An the 21st annual SoCal Classic boys soccer tournament, the host Pirates took the championship.

Kevin Knight and Jake Gerardi alternated by half in goal for the Pirates throughout the tourney.

Granite Hills (10-3-3), playing in its third tourney final of the season, including a title in the early-season Parker Tournament, got five saves from goalkeeper Arthur Nosratpour.

 

Wednesday, Dec. 30 

West Hills 3, Crawford 2 – The Wolf Pack turned the tables two days after losing to the Colts, this time in overtime to capture the tournament game.

West Hills 3, Ramona 1 – West Hills also won a tournament game against Ramona.

 

Tuesday Dec. 29

West Hills 2, San Marcos 1 – West Hills scored twice in the second half to come back from a 1-0 halftime deficit.

West Hills 2, El Camino 1 – West Hills won the tourney game, as the team went 2-0 on the day.

Crawford 2, West Hills 0 – The Wolf Pack boys soccer team lost Monday’s tournament game against Crawford by a score of 2-0.

Wednesday, Dec. 16

Grossmont 0, University City 0 – Dean Schwartz had a strong day in net for Grossmont in the physical contest at home against the Centurions.

The Foothillers’ Marvin Elyia looked strong on both the offensive and defensive ends, while Luke Adams and played enforcer to  help out their his minder. Dennis Bragg also stood his ground for Grossmont. The Foothillers are now 1-5-1, while UC is 2-5-1.

“We had a pretty good game as a team,” Schwartz said. “Our defense really stepped up. It was pretty sad that our offense couldn’t put one in, but in the end of the day, both teams had a pretty good game.”

Granite Hills 0, Chula Vista 0 – Bryce Strickland, Richard Flores and the Eagles put the heat on the Spartans, but couldn’t find the back of the net, as Granite Hills remained unbeaten at 6-0-2.

Arthur Noseratpour kept the ball out for the Eagles, supported by Pier Palo Conte, Diego Judiz and Josh Rodriguez. JJ Gaeir, Garrett Crotty and Andy Acosta also factored in the Granite attack.

 

Tuesday, Dec. 15

El Capitan 3, Kearny 2 – Seniors Jeremiah Padilla and Murtada Jawed led the Vaqueros to the win over the Comets.

Padilla had a goal and an assist, while Jawad scored his second goal of the season. Ricardo Vazquez also scored for El Capitan, which led 2-1 at halftime.

El Cap improved to 4-3-1, including 3-0 at home so far this season.

Valhalla 1, Eastlake 1 – Valhalla is now 1-3-3 this season.

Mount Miguel 1, High Tech SD 1 – Trailing 1-0 at halftime, junior Jose Gamez got the equalizer in the second half from senior Manuel Estrada.

Junior Joel Beas spent the first 45 minutes in goal, making eight saves, while senior Sergio Lopez made six saves over the final 15 minutes.

Christian 1, Mar Vista 0 – The Patriots improved to 6-0-1.

Thursday, Dec. 10

Santana 3, Madison 2 – The Sultans outscored the Warhawks 3-1 in the second half to improve to 4-0.

Junior Alejo Favero, a center back, came through with the game winning goal with less than two minutes left in the game as Santana – down 2-0 – scored 3 goals in the final 8 minutes to beat Madison 3-2.

Senior Ivan Lopez and junior Joseph Eickhoff scored for the Sultans, while the assists went to senior Alonzo Dukes, junior Jacob Robertson and sophomore Ben Sampson.

Granite Hills def. Patrick Henry, (0-0), penalty kicks (3-2) – Arthur Nostrapour, Granite Hills’ goalie, had some great saves in the final, as the Eagles won the Francis Parker Tournament and moved to 5-0 to start the season.

Christian 3, El Capitan 0 – The Patriots sealed the game with a pair of second-half goals.

El Cajon Valley 3, Sweetwater 2 – The Braves outscored the Red Devils 3-1 in the second half to score the win and improve to 2-0.

Santana 3, Morse 1 – The Sultans trailed 1-0 at intermission, but Senior Alonzo Dukes and juniors Jamal Hasten and Tristen Salinas scored in the second half to fuel the victory.

Santana senior Justin Stamm, along with playmaker Garrett DeRosiers both had an assists, as did Dukes. Senior Jacob Odenkirk had three saves for the Sultans.

El Capitan 9, Mountain Empire 1 – The Vaqueros led 4-1 at halftime.

Eastlake 2, Grossmont 1 – Grossmont trailed 1-0 at the intermission.

Christian 4, Liberty Charter 2 – The Patriots led 3-0 at halftime.  Christian got goals from Justin Wenzel (Sr), Bryson Miller (Fr), Michael Tobiason (Sr) and Freddy Quezada.
