SANTEE (2-28-16) — In front of a semi-big crowd Saturday (Feb 27) night, the No. 5-seeded Vincent Memorial Scots were able to come away with a 65-53 victory over the No. 4-seeded Santana Sultans in San Diego CIF Division IV quarterfinals action in the Sultan Palace out in Santee.
Things looked good early on for the Sultans as they were able to control the game action en route to an early 14-8 lead after the first period. However things changed for the Sultans as the Scots made some adjustments and raced their way to a convincing 22-7 taking of the second period to lead by 9 points at the break, 30-21.
The start of the second half saw both teams go back and forth in the third quarter as the Sultans edged the Scots 10-9 to only trail 39-31 heading into the final stanza. Trying to keep the Sultans in the contest was FRANKIE GUTIERREZ who poured in 15 points and TRENT BAUGH who scored 14 points. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as the big guy in the middle for the Scots, Fabian Arciniega, scorched his way to a game high for both teams of 26 points.
Both teams battled in the fourth quarter as they returned volleys. The Sultans cut the lead to single digits with just under a minute but the Scots were able to build it back up to double digits. In the end, Vincent Memorial outlasted the Sultans in the period 26-22 and 34-32 in the second half.
In a year that they were not picked to do much by some experts, Santana on the year finished at 16-11 for their first winning season since the 2010-11 season when they went 19-9. Even though they will graduate a few key guys the future looks bright for them and they look to make waves in the coming years.
Santana: Frankie Gutierrez 15 (5 reb, 5 ast, 4 stl), Trent Baugh 14 (8 reb, 2 ast), Mitchell Miller 8 (5 reb), Daulton Barry 7 (5 reb, 4 ast), Taylor Rivers 6 (6 reb, 1 ast), Sage Hicks 4 (7 reb, 2 stl), Cooper Mendoza (1 reb), Anthony Romero (1 ast), Noah Nunez (1 reb).
