SAN BERNARDINO (4-2-16) — For the 17th-ranked Grossmont Griffins softball team, the road has not been a kind place.

Going into Friday’s (Apr. 1) road contest at San Bernardino’s Ralph Lopez Jr. field, the Griffins were 3-5 away from Grossmont College.

If Friday’s contest is any indication, when San Bernardino joins the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference next year, road trips will be fun.  The Griffins took home a 12-5 victory from the Inland Empire in their final non-conference game of the regular season.

RACHEL EVERETT (Bonita Vista) was a perfect five for five at the plate.  The Griffins (21-9-1) knocked around Wolverine pitching for 16 hits, which translated to 12 runs (with 11 RBI’s).  The top four batters each had at least a pair of hits.

San Bernardino (10-21) scored one in the bottom of the first to take a quick 1-0 lead on a solo home run.

MACKENZIE REYNOLDS (Santana) reached on an error to get the second inning going.  SOPHIA SAHAGUN (Heritage Christian) sacrificed her to second base.  ALEXIS FLORES (Calexico) reached on a fielder’s choice as the Wolverines forced Reynolds at third.  JESSICA RUBIO (Patrick Henry) singled to left pushing Flores to second.  AMANDA IZZO (Hemet) doubled to center to bring in Flores to tie the game up at 1.

The Wolverines scored twice in the second to take a 3-1 lead.

Grossmont scored another pair of runs in the third.  Everett singled to left field to begin the frame.  Salazar reached on an error allowing Everett to go to second.  DIAMOND MEJIA (West Ranch) reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on a throwing error.  The error allowed Everett to score.  Flores singled to left field scoring Mejia to tie the game up at 3.

SBVC tallied a run in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 4-3.

The Green and Gold saw Izzo triple to left field in the beginning of the fourth.  KATIE SCHMIDT (Valhalla) singled to center allowing Izzo to tie the game up at 4.

That is where the game stood entering the top of the sixth inning when the Griffins blew the game open.

With one out, Everett singled to second and then stole second base to move into scoring position.  Salazar reached on an error by the shortstop allowing Everett to go to third.  Salazar then stole second.  Mejia walked to load the bases.  Reynolds walked forcing in Everett.  Sahagun singled to center allowing Salazar to score and everyone else moved up a base.  Flores cleared the bases with a triple to center field, bringing in Sahagun, Salazar and Mejia.  Rubio grounded out to first, but Flores scored.  When the dust finally settled the Griffins had scored six runs in the inning and were up 10-4.

San Bernardino tried to mount a rally, but could only score one run.

Schmidt and Everett hit back to back doubles to begin the final frame.  Everett would later score when Reynolds grounded out to second.

Grossmont will resume Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday (April 5) when San Diego City comes East.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
