IMPERIAL (4-13-16) — Grossmont College registered 22 hits as the Griffins destroyed Imperial Valley in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game that was played over 100 miles from the Pacific Coast, 14-4, on Tuesday (April 12) to shrink the sixth ranked Griffins magic number to seven.

TRAVOR BEARD (San Clemente), ROBERT BOSTEDT (Granite Hills) and ANDRES RIOS (Mater Dei, San Diego) each had three hits as the Griffins (21-9, 14-4 PCAC) totaled 32 total base runners.

TANNER PERRY (Steele Canyon) was hit by a pitch with one out to be the first baserunner of the day.  Perry would then steal second, his 17th theft of the season (tied for fourth in the State and leads all of Southern California), to move into scoring position.  The sophomore then tried to get too greedy and was caught stealing third for the second out.  NOAH STROHL (La Jolla) was at the plate while Perry was running all around the Mojave Desert, ended up walking.  JUSTIN MITCHELL (Granite Hills) was hit by a pitch to push Strohl to second.  This is when proverbial poop hit the fan.  Beard got his first hit of the day, a single, moving Mitchell to third and scoring Strohl to break the seal on the score.  JUSTEN BURKEY (San Pasqual) was in the “I can do better” mind frame as he hit a double to the wall scoring Mitchell and moving Beard to third.  Rios then singled to drive in Beard and Burkey for a four run first inning.

Imperial Valley (4-27, 0-19) did their best to keep pace with the front running Griffins.  The Arabs scored half of their run total in the bottom of the first.

The Green and Gold picked up where they left off in the top of the second.  Bostedt doubled to right and would take an extra 90 feet on an error by the right fielder.  Perry walked and stole his second base of the day to put runners on second and third.  Bostedt would score and Perry moved to third on a wild pitch.  Two batters later, Mitchell had an RBI single that drove in Perry and make the score 6-2 GC.

IVC would score a single run in the bottom of the third.

Grossmont would go on to score single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh to make it 9-4 going to the eighth inning.

In the eighth inning, Perry singled to lead the inning off.  Strohl would follow with another single, moving Perry to third.  Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to left field to allow Perry to tag and score the tenth run of the day.  Strohl would tag to second on the play as well.  Beard singled to move Strohl to third.  Burkey was plunked by a pitch to load the bases up.  Rios would single to allow the merry-go-round advance one position allowing Strohl to get off at home for the 11th run.  CABOT VAN TIL (Patrick Henry) chalked up another RBI as the merry-go-round deposited Beard at home for run 12 and closing out the scoring in the eighth inning.

In the ninth inning, Bostedt led off with a single.  SEAN CROSBY (Valhalla) who was pinch hitting for Strohl, singled moving Bostedt to second.  Mitchell walked to fill all the seats on the base paths.  Beard hit a two-run single scoring Bostedt and Crosby for the final two-point conversion of the day.

Grossmont will try to shrink the magic number even further when they make up last weeks rain out against City today.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Noel Michelsen Field.  Imperial Valley will wrap up the series against the Griffins on Thursday and Friday (April 14 and 15) at Noel Mickelsen Field.  Both games against the Arabs are also scheduled for 2 p.m.
