EL CAJON (4-27-16) — Sophomore day started on a happy note, but ended on a sad note and not just because of the sophomore activities.

It started off with a pair of runs over the course of the first two innings.  Then it turned sad as City (15-21-1, 7-12 PCAC) scored three unanswered runs and then the post-game sophomore appreciation tears.

With one out, KATIE SCHMIDT (Valhalla) walked with one out to get the 14th ranked Griffins (26-13-1, 11-8 PCAC) going.  RACHELL EVERETT (Bonita Vista) reached on a fielder’s choice as she beat out the return throw on a double play attempt.  Everett then moved up on a passed ball.  SIERRA SALAZAR (Helix) reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder allowing her to get to second.  Everett came around and scored to make it 1-0 GC.

After a strikeout to begin the second, MACKENZIE REYNOLDS (Santana) singled up the middle.  ARISA ROSADO (Olympian) singled to right center moving Reynolds to second.  A pop out to the pitcher, AMANDA IZZO (Hemet) walked to load the bases for Grossmont.  Schmidt coaxed a walk out of the City pitcher forcing Reynolds to cross the plate for a 2-0 lead.

The only problem for the Griffins is that they would not score the rest of the day.  That isn’t to say that the Griffins didn’t have opportunities to do so.

Grossmont had runners on third base twice with no one out.  In the third inning, the bases were loaded with no one out, before a strikeout and then a double play to close out the frame.

In the fourth inning, GC had runners on second and third with no one out before hitting into three outs that never left the infield.

City meanwhile, scored once in the third inning.  Then scored twice in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.

This concluded the regular season for the Griffins.  With the Southern California playoff brackets being released later this week, it will be a stressful time for the coaches and players as the seeding meeting will be held on Saturday (April 30).

Grossmont finished in second place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, there is some positive notes for the Griffins.  First they are ranked in the top 15 in the State in the latest rankings.  GC is also in the top 10 in Southern California and ranked sixth in the RPI rankings.  Put all of those together and the Griffins are almost a lock to play in the second season.  The chances of hosting a regional are slim, but they are there.
