ROUNDUP: Granite, Grossmont, Helix, Christian, Henry win

2016 EAST COUNTY PREP SOFTBALL

EL CAJON (4-30-16) — The Granite Hills Eagles traveled to Valhalla for a Grossmont Hills league contest and in the process came away with the 7-1 victory.

Granite Hills got on the board in the top of the second inning as BRENDA RUSHING (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B) led off with an infield single, she would advance to second on a passed ball and would come around to score on a ball that was within an inch or so of going out. MADISON CALDWELL (2-3, 2 RBI, 2B) smashed the offering hard and high and deep to left field as it appeared it was going to go out for the 2-run homer but the ball at the last minute stayed in and bounced off the top of the wall for the double. However that did score Rushing to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Valhalla threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the inning as RACHEL SHELLSTROM (3-4, SB) singled, stole second, KENNEDY LABSHERE would reach on an error, BRANDI KOHEL (1-3) walked, EMILY HOWARD (run) reached on a fielder’s choice which saw Shellstrom get thrown out, and ALEXIS INGRASSIA (1-4) grounded out to end the inning.

A couple of innings later in the top of the third was when the Eagles really broke the game open as they were able to push across six runs to extend their lead to 7-0. Leading things off, HALLE KYLER (1-4, R, 2B, SB) smashed a double to center, CASSDIY SHEW (2-3) reached on an infield single and Kyler advanced to second, she stole third, KAREN CREECH (run) would reach on an error by the shortstop to load the bases. JESSIE LAPIERRE (1-4, RBI) singled in a run, Rushing knocked in a couple with a double, KAYLA MACK (1-4, RBI, R, SB) would knock in a run and steal third and Caldwell would knock in a run. A big highlight of the inning for the Eagles was when KARA BLANCHARD (1-2) roped a single to left field for her first hit of the season.

Valhalla would score their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Howard reached on an error, advanced to second on the Ingrassia fielders choice, and would come around to score to make it 7-1. GIAVANNA STEINER would single in the inning.

Eagles starter Kyler would stymie the Norsemen all day as she only allowed 4 hits in which she only gave up the 1 run. She would walk 3 and strike out 3 in the complete game victory.

GROSSMONT 7, SANTANA 6 – Another wild one in the unpredictable Grossmont Hills league as the host Foothillers rallied to beat the Sultans and keep their league chances in tack.

Santana started off in the right direction as MADDY MENDEZ led off with a single, ASHLEY MADRIGAL came into run, MACKENZIE BENNETT hit a ball to left field that was called an error, Madrigal advanced to third and Bennett would advance to second on the throw. A couple of batters later RACHEL WILSON hit a fly ball double to center that scored both Madrigal and Bennett. NICOLE PENTON MARCH would double in Wilson to make it 3-0 and she would come around to score on a reach by error for SHELBY HOLMQUIST. The Sultans led 4-0 after the first half of the first inning. However the Foothillers would come roaring back with offense of their own. CHLOE CAMARERO would lead off with a bang as she clubbed a solo jack over the left field fence. DESTINY BACON, TAYLOR BAEZ would both walk and SAMARIA ROOPE would be hit by a pitch to load the bases, CARLY PEARSON hit a sacrifice fly to score Bacon to cut the lead to 4-2.

Grossmont would add more in the bottom of the second inning and actually take the lead. Leadoff batter MEGAN MALWITZ walked and advanced to second on the sacrifice by JESSICA WILSON, Camarero singled to left scoring Malwitz, Bacon singled, Baez doubled in Camarero to make it 5-4.  Another run came for Grossmont in the bottom of the fourth to make it 6-4.

Santana wouldn’t go away as they were able to push across a couple of runs in the top of the fifth inning to knot the game at 6-6. Mendez led off with a single, Madrigal came into run, Bennett double to left field which advanced Madrigal to third and she would actually score, SYDNEY VATES would walk after Bennett was caught trying to steal third base, a couple batters later CASSIDY MATTHIE smashed a double putting runners at second and third, Penton March singled in Vates to tie the game at 6-6 while Matthie advanced to third where she would be caught trying to steal home to end the inning.

Neither team could do anything in the sixth inning. Santana was put away in the top of the seventh inning. Grossmont had one last shot before extra innings in the bottom of the seventh inning. Wilson would reach on an error by Holmquist at first base, AMBER ALLMAN sacrificed Wilson to second, Camarero hit a grounder to Vates who threw her out for the second out. The craziest of plays would occur next as Bacon would hit the ball to Vates in which Wilson would come around to score as Bacon was able to stay alive long enough for Wilson to cross the plate for the game winning run.

HELIX 17, EL CAJON VALLEY 0 (5 innings) – The Highlanders scored early and often in the first couple of innings to easily put away the host Braves in Grossmont Valley league action.

Helix would receive a 5 inning complete game no-hitter from their starter VICTORIA CYMAN in which she would walk 3 and strike out 3 on the day.

She would receive offensive help from DESTINI BULLOCK who went 3-3 including a grandslam and knocked in 5 runs, and she stole a base. FRANKIE MARTINEZ would smash a double in going 3-4 while driving in a run while scoring twice. ISABELLA MENA scored 3 times and drove in 2 runs while going 1-1 from the plate.

CHRISTIAN 10, MORSE 0 – The Patriots helped themselves move into the upper half of the Eastern League as they hammered the Morse Tigers in league action.

In the bottom of the first the Patriots put 3 runs on the board thanks to SILENT RAIN ESPINOZA (2-4, RBI, 2 R, 2B) reaching on an error, ASHLEY CARTER (1-1, RBI, 3 R) being hit by a pitch, ANNA SHERBURNE (2-2, 2 RBI, 2R) knocking in a run with a single, SHANNON MCMAHON (2-3, 2 RBI, R, 2B) knocked in another run as she singled and TENAY BANEGAS (1-2, 2 RBI) drove in the other run as she grounded out to put the Patriots up 3-0.  More runs in the bottom of the third inning extended the lead for Christian.

Leadoff hitter Carter would walk, Sherburne singled, McMahon doubled in a run, Banegas drove in a run and ELLE LINDBLAD (1-1, R, RBI) drove in another run to make it 6-0.  More of the same in the bottom of the fourth as the Patriots put up another three spot. Carter would add an RBI double and Sherburne would knock in a run. MALLORY STEELE (1-3, R) would score in the inning as well.

Pitching for the Patriots, Carter would garner the victory as she tossed 5 innings of shutout ball, giving up 2 hits and fanning 5 on the day in the process.

PATRICK HENRY 9, SERRA 5 – The Patriots with their win in Eastern League play kept their league crown hopes alive as they stayed within Scripps Ranch as they beat the host Conquistadors.

Patrick Henry struck first with a run in the top of the first inning to lead 1-0 early on as CRISTIONA CACCAMISE (3-4, RBI, 3 R, HR) singled and DANI ROMERO (2-4, RBI, R, 2B) doubled her in. However the lead didn’t last as Serra was able to knot the score at 1-1 behind an RBI single by TAYLOR CURLEY(2-4, 2 RBI, R).

The Patriots got on the board again with another run in the top of the second inning as LAILA SPRACKLEN (2-3, 2 R) would come into score to make it 2-1. They added two more in the top of the third inning to lead 4-1.  Leadoff hitter ANYA VANDERSIP (1-4) singled, Caccamise reached on a fielders choice in which Vandersip was thrown out at second, ANDREA WRIGHT (2-4, 2 RBI, R, HR) a couple of batters later, crushed a 2-run jack.

The lead for the Patriots wouldn’t last as the Conquistadors fought back in the bottom of the third inning. Leadoff hitter DARBY TIBBETTS (run) was hit by a pitch, VIVIAN TOMOVICH (3-3) was also hit by a pitch, BRIANNA CORONADO (2 R) came into run, AMBER WOZNIAK (2-3, R) would load the bases with her single to left field, Curley would single which scored Tibbetts, Coronado advanced to third base and Wozniak advanced to second base. MEGAN POOLE (RBI) would fly out to center allowing Coronado to score, Wozniak to third, JACQUELINE KAMERY (RBI) hit into a fielders choice which allowed Wozniak to score, Curley would come into score when VALERIE VALADEZ (RBI) would reach on an error. Now the score was 5-4 in favor of the Conquistadors.  The lead again would change as the Patriots pushed across 2 runs in the top of the fourth to retake the lead 6-5.

Patrick Henry would score another run in the top of the sixth when JOSIE GONZALEZ (1-4, RBI, R) would come into score when CASSIE VAN TIL (RBI) knocked her in to make it 7-5. They tacked on a couple more runs to extend their lead to 9-5 in the top of the seventh. Caccamise jacked a solo shot homer and Romero singled and scored when Josie Gonzalez knocked her in on a single.

Getting the win was Spracklen for the Patriots who came in to relive RUBY GONZALEZ who tossed 3 innings, giving up 5 runs of which all were earned on 8 hits and struck out 3 while Spracklen tossed 4 innings, giving up 0 runs on 1 hit while fanning 4 on the day in the victory.
