LAKESIDE – The No. 5-seeded El Capitan Vaqueros (24-4) hosted the No. 12-seeded Pomona Catholic Pacers (24-9) out of the Southern Section in the first round of the Division IV CIF State volleyball playoffs on Wednesday (Nov.16th).

In front of a great crowd, the home team Vaqueros, who were playing in their first ever state tournament and coming off their big CIF Division IV Championship victory over Classical Academy last Saturday, which was a first in school history, were able to take care of business against the Pacers as they swept the match 25-10, 25-15, 25-14.

The win added to El Capitan’s magical year which included a league crown for the second time ever.

Leading the charge for the Vaqueros was a multitude of players including University of Massachusetts-Lowell-bound GRACE BURKETT, who had a co-team high of 11 kills to go along with adding 6 more blocks to her CIF record breaking total of 320 coming into the contest.

Also leading in kills was MEGAN GILLETTE who also had 11 kills on the night. She also had 3 serving aces on the night as well.

With the victory the Vaqueros will now take to the road with hopes of continuing their school record setting journey and travel to Loma Linda for the quarterfinals matchup to take on the No. 4-seeded Roadrunners of Loma Linda Academy who won their first round match against Sierra 3-1 to improve their record to 24-4. The contest will take place Saturday, November 19th at 7pm.
