ROUNDUP: Eastern hoopsters have rough go on Friday

EL CAJON (12-17-16) —  The Grossmont Foothillers suffered a jolting second quarter of the Grossmont Winter Tournament when the visiting Escondido Cougars outscored them 24-8 on Friday (Dec. 16).

They never rebounded from the deficit, falling to the Cougars 62-54.

The loss dropped the Foothillers’ record to 2-5.

HUNTER GAINES picked up his scoring pace with 17 points, 6 rebounds, one assist and 2 steals to lead the Foothillers.

AUSTIN ODOM hit a three and so did MYKOL RODRIGUEZ. DOMONIQUE GUEVARA also hit a three.

“We went a little stagnant in the second quarter and that hurt us,” said Grossmont coach FRANK FOGGIANO.

Saturday (Dec. 17) the Foothillers will face No. 1 ranked Mission Hills at Grossmont at 7:30 p.m.

Grossmont:  Hunter Gaines 17 (6 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl), Damageae Gant 11 (2 reb), Austin Odom 5 (1 reb), Domonique Guevara 5 (5 reb), Jamie Odom 5 (1 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Hunter Mulder 4 (3 reb).

 

OLYMPIAN 88, SANTANA 60 – Santana lost a runnin’ gun 88-60 game Friday (Dec. 16) in the Grossmont Winter Tournament at Grossmont High.

NICK BERHALTER turned in his usual powerful game for Santana with 26 points, 6 rebounds and one assist as the Sultans came up short.

BRANDON SIMMONS dropped in 9 points while dishing 2 assists and making 2 steals.

ANDREW HITCHCOCK followed suit with 9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

TC SIMMONS spun in 8 points, snared 4 rebounds and created one assist.

JOHN BOBOF added 6 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and a block.

ZACH LEGGITT contributed 5 points and 2 rebounds.

Santana:  Nick Berhalter 26 (6 reb, 1 ast), Brandon Simmons 9 (2 ast, 2 stl), TC Simmons 8 (4 reb, 1 stl), Cole Kincaid 6 (4 reb, 1 ast), John Bobof 6 (2 reb, 4 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk), Zach Leggitt 5 (2 reb), Simone Maritano (1 reb, 1 ast).

 

VALLEY CENTER 63, MONTE VISTA 45 – Valley Center took a 21-2 first quarter lead in Friday’s (Dec. 16) Grossmont Winter Tournament, and then eventually buried the Monte Vista Monarchs.

Once again the cornerstone for the Monarchs was DEONDRE McHAYLE who poured in 23 points. McHayle hit 3 threes, 5 of 6 free throws but was outnumbered all night.

“I can’t believe I’m so lucky to have a guy like Deondre McHayle,” said Monarchs coach MIKE TULLY.

DAVID GARCIA had 12 points and FERNANDO GUERRERO tossed in 6 more.

Monte Vista:  Deondre McHayle 23, David Garcia 12, Fernando Guerrero 6, Derrick Wiley 4.

 

FOOTHILL 86, MOUNT MIGUEL 38 – Visiting Mount Miguel was no match for Foothills Friday (Dec. 16) in the Las Vegas Tarkanian Classic.

The Matadors trailed 51-22 at halftime and it never got better.

“We played the second best team in Las Vegas,” said Matadors coach JAY ROWLETT. “We hope to bounce back tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 17) when we play SCTA at 11:30 a.m.

The Matadors will also play Rancho at 3:30.

Mount Miguel:  Darian Norwood 14 (10 reb, 1 ast), Mikeece Dunbar 11 (2 reb, 1 stl), Devon Brown 6 (3 reb), Marquis Neal 3 (2 reb), James Allen 2 (1 reb, 1 ast), Marquise Edwards 1 (2 reb), Justice Chima 1 (2 reb), Ricky Harvey (2 reb), Raymond Lucas (2 reb), Mugabe Miller (1 reb).

 

VALHALLA 44,  FRANCIS PARKER 41 – The Norsemen’s TY SCHIMKE had 14 points to lead the Norsemen.

JONAH HOWARD added 11 points, and RAMZI SULTAN punched in 10 more.

Valhalla:  No other scoring available.

 

CHULA VISTA 39, EL CAJON VALLEY 35 – No further information provided for this Friday (Dec. 16) Grossmont Winter Tournament game.

 

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 84, MIRA MESA 47 – At, Grossmont, round 1 of the Grossmont Tournament went to the Knights, who improved to 6-0.
