SAN YSIDRO (12-24-16) – In the championship game of the San Ysidro Cougar Classic, the Valhalla Norsemen were ready, showing limited stages of fatigue.

That was a good sign because Valhalla needed every ounce of energy to prevail in a 65-63 win over Mission Bay to capture the tournament title.

“Every guy stepped it up and elevated their game,” noted Valhalla assistant coach SCOTT STURGEON of the nightcap championship contest. “This game was very physical. They came out and cranked up the pressure. We had 12 turnovers in the first quarter.

The Valhalla Norsemen following their Cougar Classic championship victory Friday night over Mission Bay.

“MALIQUE SHAW was really big down low. He rolled a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. He and RAMZI SULTAN really picked up the scoring for us. Sultan also spun a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

“EVAN O’NEILL hit his three 3s in the third quarter and that’s when we started taking the lead.”

The Norsemen lobbed 7 treys in the game – besides O’Neil’s 3, KAI KOMAKI had 2, TY SCHIMKE had one and Sultan added one more.

“We got the lead in the third quarter. Ty and Kai, as guards, handled the pressure really well. In the fourth quarter with three minutes left, Ty hit a huge three. They closed the lead down but we had enough of a lead to win it.

“Ty played one of his best defensive games ever,” Sturgeon continued. “He was just phenomenal. He took Mission Bay’s best player, Rejean Ellis, out of the game. Ellis was a great point guard and Ty just shut his game down.”
