ROUNDUP: Highlanders, Eagles, Matadors keep pace

LA MESA (2-8-17) — Led by 6-foot-7 junior MILES NORRIS, the Helix Highlanders stomped on Grossmont 69-41 in Tuesday’s (Feb. 7) Grossmont Hills League encounter.

The Highlanders took command across the board with a 38-21 halftime lead.

Norris played a key role by punching in 15 points, ripping down 13 rebounds and blocking 8 shots.

It’s no secret Norris is a heavily recruited athlete. Among those who have him on their recruiting list are UCLA, Arizona, Gonzaga, SDSU, St. John’s New York, Oregon State, Oregon, Texas, UNLV, USC, Utah, Washington State, Washington, Memphis and West Virginia.

Helix continued to roll after that to maintain its 6-0, 21-5 league lead. The Highlanders can clinch at least a share of the league title with a win against Valhalla on Friday night at home.

JAYLEN ARNOLD led Helix with 16 points, followed closely by JAYLEN HINSON and DYLAN LEE with 9 apiece.

STEELE CANYON 48, VALHALLA 44 (OT) – GAGE SANDERS hit 3 treys and was 4 for 4 from the free throw line for 17 points as Steele Canyon knocked off Valhalla in a Grossmont Hills League overtime match Tuesday (Feb. 7) at Cougar Canyon.

TYLER SMITH punched in 12 points for the Cougars.

“We did well holding (Valhalla’s MALIQUE) SHAW) intact,” said Cougars coach DEREK STEPHENS. “He hit some monstrous shots but it wasn’t enough to keep them in contention.”

Steele Canyon:  Gage Sanders 17, Tyler Smith 12, De’Angelo Lewis 7, S.Gonzales 5, Dillon DeForest 3, Jalen Sayles 2, Thomas Fishburne 2.

Valhalla: No report.

MOUNT MIGUEL 66, EL CAJON VALLEY 29 – Led by DARIAN NORWOOD’s double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with 3 steals and an assist, Mount Miguel cruised in front of the El Cajon Valley Braves on Tuesday (Feb. 7) in a Grossmont Valley League contest.

Not to miss his chances, MIKEECE DUNBAR launched 4 three-pointers to finish with 14 points for the Matadors.

MARQUISE EDWARDS grabbed 7 rebounds for Mount Miguel, which kept up its pursuit of first-place Granite Hills.

Mount Miguel:  Darian Norwood 15 (12 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl), Mikeece Dunbar 14 (2 ast, 2 stl), Ricky Harvey 8 (5 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl), Marquis Neal 7 (2 ast, 1 stl), Devon Brown 7 (4 reb, 2 ast), Marquise Edwards 4 (7 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Justice Chima 4 (2 reb, 3 stl), Raymond Lucas (1 reb).

 

GRANITE HILLS 64, MONTE VISTA 50 – CAMERON SPITZER knocked down 4 three- pointers for the Eagles to finish with 20 points and 6 assists as Granite Hills steamrollered to a 26-4 first quarter lead in Tuesday’s (Feb. 7) Grossmont Valley League contest.

The Eagles, currently the league leaders by one game over Mount Miguel, continued to coast after that.

RYAN KELLY collected 15 points and 13 rebounds plus 6 assists to land the Eagles.

MOSES SMITH tossed in 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds.

DEONDRE McHAYLE led the Monarchs with a double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds, while ANDREW CANTY and AMIR CONLEY each posted 12 markers but it wasn’t enough to ground the Eagles.

Granite Hills:  Cameron Spitzer 20 (3 reb, 6 ast), Ryan Kelly 15 (13 reb, 6 ast, 3 blk, 2 stl), Moses Smith 14 (4 reb, 1 stl), Jorden Rogers 8, Austin Ballo 3 (2 reb, 1 ast), Xsavier Smith 2 (6 reb, 2 ast,4 blk), Cody Cox 2, Aaron Cobb (2 ast, 1 blk), David Coffey (1 reb, 1 stl).

Monte Vista: Deondre McHayle 18 (18 reb, 2 stl, 1 ast), Andrew Canty 12 (5 reb, 2 ast, 2 stl), Amir Conley 12 (2 stl, 2 ast), Arman Johnson 6 (1 reb, 1 ast, 2 stls), Andrew Gonzalez 5 (9 reb, 2 blk, 1 stl), Derrick Wiley 2, Ty Underwood (5 reb).

 

CHRISTIAN 66, SAN DIEGO 40 – The Patriots of Christian High raced to a 25-11 first quarter lead and built a 46-20 halftime advantage over the Knights in Tuesday’s (Feb. 7) non-league contest.

Four Patriots reached the double-digit mark, led by JACKSON LARSEN’s 20 points and 4 for 4 free throw shooting.

DOMANIC SAFARTA followed with 16 points including 4 treys.

NASHOM CARTER chucked in 15 markers, grabbed 8 rebounds and dealt 7 assists, while DANIEL WELCH added 11 tallies.

PATRICK ROBERTS snared 7 rebounds.
