Foothillers, Cougars drop Monday tilts

EL CAJON (3-20-17) – In a non-league contest that saw the Point Loma Pointers jump out to a 4-0 lead, the Grossmont Foothillers rallied, but unfortunately dropped a 5-4 decision in eight innings on Monday.

The Pointers did the early damage all with two outs as the first two batters got on and the next two would be retired.

The leadoff hitter smashed a double to center driving in two runs and the next hitter followed two-RBIwo RBI single to make it 4-0.

Grossmont would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when leadoff hitter DESTINY BACON (1-3, 2 R, 3 SB) reached on an error by the shortstop, she stole second base and would score on a SAMARIA ROOPE single, CHLOE CAMARERO (2-5) would drive in LILI FLORES who came into run to cut the lead in half 4-2.

The Foothillers would strike again in the bottom of the fifth as ALEXIS COLLINS (1-4) led off with a single to right center, KATIE APPENZELLER (RUN) came into run, with two outs AMBER ALLMAN (2-4, RBI, 2B) smashed a single that scored Appenzeller to pull within 4-3.

A couple of innings later the Foothillers were down to the last at bat and with one out, Bacon came up and laced a single to center, stole second and scored on a single to left by JORDAN BROWN to knot the score 4-4.

They had an opportunity to end the game but couldn’t get the hit needed so the game went into extra frames.

Point Loma led off with a walk by Harget, she would eventually score on a single by Santos to give the Pointers a 5-4 lead.

Grossmont had one more shot to either tie the game and keep the game going or score a couple and end it.  Leadoff batter JESSICA WILSON flied out for the first out, Camarero singled, Allman walked advancing Camarero to second with only one out. The next batter Collins unfortunately struck out for the second out, so down to their final out up stepped TAYLOR BAEZ who was able to draw a walk to load the bases. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be as Bacon flied out to left field to end the game.

Leadoff batter JESSICA WILSON flied out for the first out, Camarero singled, Allman walked advancing Camarero to second with only one out. The next batter Collins, unfortunately, struck out for the second out, so down to their final out up stepped TAYLOR BAEZ who was able to draw a walk to load the bases.

Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be as Bacon flied out to left field to end the game.

 

EASTLAKE 8, STEELE CANYON 2 – A late surge of offense by the Eastlake Titans doomed the Steele Canyon Cougars as they dropped the Falcon Fiesta contest.

Things were looking really good for the home team Cougars as they were able to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a leadoff solo-blast by AUDREY BAGGE (2-4, R, RBI, HR).

They added another run in the bottom of the second as MAKAYLA MCCARTHY (1-2) led off with a single to center, MASEN PEARLSTEIN (RUN) came into run, she advanced to second on a passed ball, MARIANA MARTINEZ sacrificed Pearlstein to third, she scored on a fly ball by EMMA DODSON (1-2, RBI) to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

Steele Canyon would briefly enjoy that lead as the Titans would score a run on a throwing error and also another run on a groundout to tie the score at 2-2.

Steele Canyon would have an opportunity in the bottom of the fourth as leadoff hitter MAKAYLA STROMENGER (1-3, 2B) doubled, ELIZABETH BOTT came into run but would be wiped out on a double play ball by Martinez which ended the inning and threat by the Cougars.

The score would remain tied until the top of the seventh when the Titans would explode for six runs on 5 hits plus a fielding mistake and a hit by pitch. Eastlake now led 8-2.

Leadoff batter for the Cougars in the bottom of the seventh, Dodson singled, however she would be out on a fielder’s choice by SAMANTHA MILLER, the next batter MACKENSIE PEARLSTIEN (1-3) struck out, Bagge kept the inning alive as she singled with two outs, GENTRY HOFFMAN (1-4) unfortunately couldn’t keep it going as she was retired on a fly ball to end the game.
