Havird tackles next challenge at NAU

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – After graduating from Gardner Webb University in December, former Valhalla High star SPENCER HAVIRD has accepted a full athletic scholarship to Northern Arizona University to attend graduate school and continue his college football career.
Havird completed his stay at Gardner Webb with 34 straight starts at free safety, 17 pass break ups and 3 interceptions. His first game for the Lumberjacks will be against University of Arizona in Tucson on September 2.
Havird will play his first game at Walkup Skydome the following week against visiting Western Illinois.
In 2015, Havird started all 11 games in the secondary for Gardner-Webb and finished with 57 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and a career-high 11 pass break ups. He led the Big South in passes defended (12) and pass break ups, and was ranked fifth in the Big South with a pair of fumble recoveries.
In 2014, he started all 12 games at free safety, making 60 total tackles (34 solo). He had 1.5 tackles for loss, one fumble recovery, an interception and four pass break ups.
A three-sport star at Valhalla, Havird played football under coach CHARLES BUSSEY and started for three seasons. He was the 2012 East County Defensive Player of the Year.

Havird, a senior, is joined on the Lumberjacks roster by another East County vet, redshirt freshman NATE STINSON. Stinson played in one game last season, in which he was injured, causing him to miss the remainder of the campaign.
